In the age of sugar coated everything, this book is a truly refreshing read! The stories in this book are some of the traditional, witty tales that we adults grew up with--where unsuspecting characters are eaten, gruesome villains are decapitated, and make-believe monsters try to do you in. I am a mom of 3 boys, aged 4 years, 2 years and 8 months. My 2 oldest children want to read this entire book during just one sitting EVERYDAY (the 4 year old carries his "fairy tale book" around everywhere)--this is definitely a household favorite! The storytelling in Yummy is straightforward, extremely vibrant and really exciting for young readers. I love reading this book with over the top drama for extra (and equally dramatic) laughs and gasps. I'm so happy that I am able to pass down these fairy tales and make some pretty great memories for our family!

I got this book after reading the reviews, and I was not disappointed. The illustrations are great: large and bright. I read this book to my 2.5 year old twins and it holds their attention.Some reviews said that the illustrations were "graphic". I disagree - I thought that the illustrations were funny,amusing and very child-friendly. The one in Red Riding Hood where grandma's legs are sticking out of the wolf's mouth (singled out by one reviewer as scary) made my girls giggle and they were not bothered by the "violence" some reviewers alleged was present in the stories one bit.I was very happy with the size of the book: large, bigger than A4 format. That makes it easy to read to multiple children at the same time at bedtime. The book cover is sturdy and can withstand "toddler love". Pages are easy to turn for the little hands as well.I realize that, in our society, classic stories (by Brothers Grimm,Perro, etc) are perceived as violent, which is true for some. But the stories in this book are not: evil is punished, and good prevails, there is no blood, gore, or anything that is disturbing to little kids. Yes, the wolf eats the grandma and Red Riding Hood, but they magically appear in the end unscathed.This is the first book illustrated by Lucy Cousins I've purchased, and I will likely get more.

I love, love, love this oversized fairy tale book. Lucy Cousins retells several very traditional fairy tales without sugar-coating them or changing the endings--but she manages to do it in a way that does not give children nightmares--instead, they ask to be read the stories over and over and over again. The simplicity of the telling and the bold, colorful illustrations help to make the stories less scary. There are no apologies, just the stories the way they should be.

Love. This. Gorgeous. Book! Faithful rendering of classic fairy tales, including many of the sad and scary bits. No hemming and hawing or eye-covering here. Signature Lucy Cousins illustrations. One of our family's favorite read-alouds.

My son loves this book, he is a learning to read so the pictures and emphasized words are wonderful. He had a doctor's appointment and carried this book through his surgery, the pediatrician loved it, and wanted it for her office and kids.

I purchased this for my 3-year old and 6-year old and they both love it. My 6-year old has a short attention span, so the shorter versions of the tales are great for her. My kids know the "full" stories and we have other books with longer versions. My 3-year old quotes from this book. Yes, there are a few "violent" pictures and the 2 of the 3 little pigs get eaten, etc. My kids weren't upset at all about those pictures. They were very interested in them because they don't usually see pictures like that. The pictures are drawn as kids would probably imagine the events. I do change the reading of the 3 little pigs so the 2 don't get eaten. My kids are used to the version where they run to the other pigs' homes. Overall this is a fun book that is also fun for adults to read to their kids.

It is great to have these folk tales all in one book, and for the most part the illustrations are fabulous--colorful and imaginative as Lucy Cousins' books are. The one drawback is that some of the drawings are very, very graphic. For instance, in The Little Red Riding Hood story, the wolf bites off Grandma's head and it flies across the page. This requires some discussion.

My son loves the Maisy books and fairy tales, so what a perfect combination! The stories are good. The little red riding hood is the most "graphic" but even then I didn't think it was that bad, especially for boys. He laughed at it.

I should have paid closer attention to this guide's published date when I purchased it. If I had, I wouldn't have bought it as it was published in 2005, nine years ago! I was looking for current information, not outdated information. The text is an easy read and entertaining for dog owners which is the only reason I gave it 3 stars. Some of the demographic information may be helpful, but as it is all out of date, one cannot depend on it for being correct and/or current information. Sad...I also purchased her text, Dog Lover's Guide to California, but it is more current having been published in March 2011. I've re-learned a valuable lesson -- for correct/current information when traveling with your dogs, be sure the reference is less than 2 yrs old...

Let's face it our four legged companions dictate pretty much where we go and what we see when it comes to traveling. This book shows you everything you need to know to have an amazing adventure with your dog. I highly recommend it and Cooper gives it four paws.

Look, you got a dog or two? Living or traveling in southern California? Then you need this book! Seriously, to find out which beaches, parks, restaurants, hotels, etc. will accept your pooch in LA or OC, this is it. Lots of little-known dog-friendly places and tips on travel make this book worth its price.

I am glad I got this book. Lots of good ideas and things to do with the Dog. Only reason it does not have five stars is that I wish the book was more detailed with hiking trails and more places to eat with the Dog

Having fun checking out all the hikes, dog parks, eateries with the family pet. This book makes it easy to do that!

Love this book! It is always in the car and always helpful. Nice write-ups about the different parks and places to walk. If you like to run around with your dog do buy one of these and leave it in the car.

Wow -- in planning a vacation to Big Bear Lake, I found a great dog-friendly lodge thanks to this lively written guidebook. What a resource: It lists so many parks that I didn't know allowed dogs, plus lots of hikes for great views of the Pacific. We're looking forward to going to the dog-friendly stores listed for Beverly Hills and taking the ferry to Catalina Island. Our dog adooooores this book! She's no longer cooped up at home.

Pthreads, while still widely used, should be avoided in favor of the standard C and C++ threading libraries. OpenMP, while unique, is disfavored by experts and doesn't have performance advantages over the C++ standard library.

I found the material in this book to be very good. This book reads much easier than other books on this topic. However, for anyone interested in this book, there are a few assumptions that are made in prerequisite knowledge.*good knowledge of the c language.*knowledge about how to set up compilers (this is required to be able to compile the code as the compiler won't automatically compile the code)

I did not know a thing about the subject. After reading this book (of the library) I learnt a lot about the subject and today I use it regularly in my code. I think the book is so good that I bought one.

A very good book with intro to C language refresher. Its good for people with medium level expertise in C language , it covers quite a number of Libs, Really good for a beginner.

I purchased this for an intro course on parallel programming and didn't really find it helpful at all in actually learning how to implement most of the theory in the book. I don't really get why this is getting such high praise. Better off going to google and getting help there as the examples are severely lacking (looking particularly at the chapter covering the traveling salesman problem)

Looks useful for getting started the the pthreads method, after I get started with a compatible C++ compiler.

The Kindle format for this book is really hard to read. A typewriter font is often used for variable names. Unfortunately when switching between this font and the common font a line break is inserted. This makes it difficult to determine where a paragraph ends. It also means that many lines begin with end punctuation which also makes it difficult to read.

This is a great book for anyone interested in getting started with Natural Building. Conrad guides you through all the required steps from foundation on up in a very succinct yet comprehensive way. I also had the opportunity to attend one of his workshops that basically followed everything in the book and helped me greatly in getting hands on experience. I like his writing and teaching style as he gets straight to the essentials and always has great tips for achieving the best results in a simple way - perhaps due to his many years of acquiring knowledge and expertise. This book could be a good guide to help you get started with a small project (like a cob oven in your backyard) and then help guide you to something bigger once you had some hands on experience. Lastly, there are also techniques mentioned that can help turn your conventional home into a natural home - depending on how much effort one is willing to put into it - from adding light straw-clay in walls, to applying natural plaster and even natural paint to top it off.

I found that in reading Conrad's book I began to resonate with his deeper purpose in writing his book. He is very good with specific technical details that any beginner, like myself, really needs. But what is also needed is the motivation to actually do it. Cob is labor intensive and in this instant access culture, we are not taught the value of patience, love of work in the present moment which takes away the boredom of any task and how all of this returns us back to ourselves, our Spirits.I really appreciate the honesty and integrity of the author in saying that cob building is time consuming but what else ARE we doing that is so important anyway? More movies, more texting, more empty stimulation? He points out that we all want to connect to the earth, do something REAL and feel the pride and satisfaction that is intrinsic to building our own abode- something that has been done for millennia yet is so foreign in this recent day and age. I think with this book he is trying to bring that back and to teach from a beginning level with enough how-to's that anyone can start in whichever way they can.I highly recommend this book.

Conrad Rogue's book on earthen construction is a must for all back-to-the-landers, as well as anyone interested in trying to live more simply in our increasingly complex and fragmented world. For it is not just a how-to build book but in many ways a how-to live book on using simple materials and techniques to beautify one's surroundings and learn how to live more compassionately and joyfully. Plus, these buildings are just damn fun to build.

I highly recommend this book if you are interested in learning more about earthen building and/or if you are preparing to do some earthen building of your own. I have read and appreciated using "The Hand-Sculpted House" which thoroughly covers cob building. What's nice about My House of Earth is that it covers in much more detail various other types of earthen building techniques, such as adobe and earthbags. There is also helpful and more technical information about earthen building that is not covered in the first book mentioned. I have gotten well into my own first cob project (a smaller backyard building), and so I feel I can speak to the benefits of this book not just as a reader but as someone who has referenced it repeatedly throughout a build project. I received my training from a workshop w/ Conrad (the book's author). He is a great and fun teacher, and I recommend his workshops as well.
