Having read Betrayal and thoroughly enjoyed it, I decided to read Chasing Ivan (CI) prior to the new release, Pushing Brilliance (PB), as CI is the precursor to PB, introducing us to Achilles.Good characters in CI. Our hero, Achilles, will be interesting to follow as I hope will be Jo Montfort. As for worthwhile adversaries, Ivan the Ghost and his subordinate, Michael, and their approach of ‘creative coercions’, would certainly fill the role of very worthy adversaries if they appear later in PB or other follow-ons. As for dolts, the new CIA Director Rider and his sub-par political appointment within the CIA, Oscar Pincus, would always add well placed frustration. The plot moves fast and is well written with rich technical detail. I certainly agree with author’s apparent less than positive view of the nature of most politicians.

Iwas very, very impressed, both the with the story itself, and with the quality narration performance. Dick Hill is one of my very favorite performers. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. In fact, I almost always do immersive reading since I love to sometimes skip ahead of the narrator, so I had both versions of this book. This wonderful story is the prequel to Pushing Brilliance, the first in the Kyle Achilles series. This shorter story lays down a brief history of Kyle and provides the background for his character in Pushing Brilliance. Kyle has been recruited into the CIA special ops and is tasked to complete a very special, very specific task - the assassination of The Ghost. Working with just his brains, his considerable skills, and the very able assistance of another operative, the story unfolds into a suspenseful thriller from London to France to Monaco to Washington, D.C. Although actually a prequel, this story is completely separate from Pushing Brilliance, and you do not need to read the next in the series to thoroughly enjoy it. It is actually complete from beginning to end, until possibly the last paragraph, which leaves a possible opening for something else. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the background, history, and relationships that prompted Kyle to be the operative he is in Pushing Brilliance, and, hopefully, beyond, in even more stories in this series.

Meet Kyle Achilles, former Olympic biathlete now a CIA agent. The novella Chasing Ivan is a prequel to the Achilles (he has always been called by his last name) series. In this novella three things happen, we find Achilles engaged in his final special op as a CIA agent, we meet a french woman named Josephine Monfort, who is also a CIA agent and who is ordered to partner with Achilles in this assignment, and we meet “Ivan the Ghost,” assumed to be Russian and who is a criminal mastermind.Jo Monfort lives in France and is the daughter of con artists who taught her their skills, which she used successfully until she decided she wanted to be legit. Ivan the Ghost is “so skilled in the art of invisibility that his very existence was in doubt.” He operates outside the law and beyond apprehension, because no one has ever seen his face. He is unidentifiable by any means other than his ability to put together criminal plans that no one can seem to outwit. This novel is set in the playground of the rich and famous, the principality of Monaco during the Monaco Yacht Show. Social media offers up the means for Ivan to enter the world of British politics.A young woman, the estranged daughter of a leading candidate for Mayor of London, is enticed by a man she meets online, then, when she is finally scheduled to meet him, she is provided with the appropriate apparel to wear, including a very special necklace, and is taken by limo to the airport where she is flown to Monaco. Once there, her father’s candidacy is hijacked, and, for the first time, Achilles actually sees Ivan and almost captures him. This is only a part of my full review, which you can read where the 3-book set is offered. I strongly recommend these books.

This was a fun read. I’ve just begun to follow this writer and realize he is very prolific, so intend to stay with him for a while.I don’t re tell story lines in my reviews. Instead, I focus on plot, character development, rising action, falling action, anti climax where apparent and resolution. I also do not read other reviewers reviews because if I want a synopsis of the read before I select it, I will read the fly leaf, or editor’s notes.I liked the plot very much. It kept me interested from page one to page last. I purposefully put the book down from time to time to see if I needed to re read passages/pages in order to recall where I left off. I was able to recall what had happened which translated to me as good plot development. The characters, both protagonist and antagonist were well developed. The good guy was an excellent investigator and the antagonist was crafty. The poor victim was incredulous insofar as the intentions of the antagonist. The action flowed right up the end without any “filler”, i.e., the writer did not run out of ideas of where next to take the story or the action. The anti climax was clever and the resolution was fitting. This was a piece of intelligent writing.I recommend not only this book, but also the writer to those who have not read him as yet.

Chasing Ivan was my introduction to Tim Tigner's work and I must say I became hooked right away. This is a prequel to his other two books so far in the Kyle Achilles series (Pushing Brillance & Lies of Spies). The plots in all six of his books are definitely full of twists and surprises and seem a bit far-fetched, but who knows? I'm convinced that similarly bizarre and unimaginable events have occurred in the spy world that we know nothing about. If you like Daniel Silva, David Baldacci, Vince Flynn, James Patterson and Brad Thor, you'll want to add Tim Tigner to the list. Now that I have finished reading each of his books, I can 5-star them all without reservation and eagerly await the next Kyle Achilles adventure.

#1,926 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I did not want this book to end. I live in Chicago, and of course knew all the places but on a personal note I moved to San Francisco in 1987 to do AIDS education. 6 months after moving there my brother was diagnosed with AIDS and died Jan 27th, 1990. The descriptions of the disease, the bedside vigils were spot on. This book was amazing. I loved how she tied the early years of the epidemic with the Paris story and how Fiona could channel her anger. I am wrung out. Please read this book.

This is really two novels under the same covers, told in alternating chapters. One is terrific, the other one only OK. The terrific one takes place in Chicago's Boystown during the worst days of the AIDS catastrophe. The characters are sympathetic and believable, though flawed in many ways, and the author makes us both wonder about what their fate will be and care about it. If you were in Chicago at that era, you'll probably find it especially interesting, but I related to it even though I've never set foot in the Windy City. The OK novel takes place 30 years later in Paris, with a mother searching for her daughter who is alienated and fleeing a cult. I confess that I found her adventures somewhat hard to identify with, though the story would appeal to anyone with maternal instincts. The protagonist here is Fiona, who was the sister of a man who died of AIDS in the other half; a few of the chacters appear in both parts, but mostly in minor roles, and (except for Fiona) are not well developed. The author is a master of storytelling and kept me turning the pages, but I think I'd have enjoyed this more if I'd just read the odd-numbered chapters, though there is a heart-rending scene at the very end that's worth waiting for.

This sprawling, intimate novel takes on the legacy of the AIDS crisis, focusing on one group of friends in Chicago in the 1980s.It’s 1985 and Yale Tishman’s friends are dying one by one. As his career at a Chicago art gallery begins to take off, his personal life is consumed with loss—not to mention the looming fear of getting sick himself. Yale throws himself into a new project, helping the aunt of one of his late friends Nico unveil a collection of paintings from famous 1920s artists that she once knew. The novel jumps between 1985 to 2015, where Nico’s sister Fiona, once the caretaker of her brother and his friend as they slowly succumbed to AIDS, attempts to track down her estranged daughter. Fiona has spent her entire adult life burdened by grief, hesitant to get close to anyone.Makkai does a wonderful job of weaving together these two timelines, revealing not only the urgency and devastation of the AIDS crisis as it was unfolding, but the lasting legacy for those who were touched by it.This is a dense novel that demands careful attention. At times it’s slow, but it’s rewarding—especially toward the end as key connections are made between Fiona and Yale’s narratives, forming the whole picture like a newly restored painting. It’s not as deeply emotional as I expected for a book with such heavy subject matter—due in part perhaps to the dual timelines. That said, the especially poignant passages feel earned. Every now and then a particular sentence would strike me hard. There are families we’re born into a families we choose. Love that ends abruptly and love that lasts a lifetime. The Great Believers is about all of that, about the bonds we form and the people in our lives who make us who we are.

Michael Cunningham's review in the NYT was spot-on: this is a beautifully-written novel that captures its different characters through the most descriptive little details, and I grew to care about every single one. For anyone who wants to better understand how HIV/AIDS decimated communities, and how those communities were ostracized and feared, it is a poignant telling. I'm very glad I read it and would highly recommend it as a compelling, well-crafted summer read.

This is a really excellent book. It tells a messy, human story in elegant language, layering its themes lovingly. I consider myself extraordinarily lucky to be alive at a time when Rebecca Makkai is publishing fiction; she is a master storyteller, intelligent, bold, and subtle.Others have noted how painstakingly Makkai researched -- and how accurately it seems she has represented -- AIDS and the gay community in 1980s Chicago. I think it's also worth noting how well she represents visual art, university development, and 2015 Paris. The details that provide the background and plot of this novel help make its characters real, which in turn helps me as a reader care about the protagonists. The Great Believers draws its two primary protagonists very well, and distinguishes them both from each other and from the well-sketched ensemble players. It was easy to identify with these characters, even (perhaps especially) in their imperfections. This novel is at once tragic and hopeful. Makkai writes with deceptively simple language that packs a punch in the protagonists' every triumph and loss. Things are so well constructed that with seemingly a single sentence, the reader feels the impact of a glance, a death, even one person telling another he's inferior.I hesitate to criticize anything in this novel because it's so well crafted that I suspect anything I perceive as a shortcoming will become another rewarding layer upon a second reading. I'm eager to read this novel again.
