The OBG Classics edition published September 11, 2017, claims to be "the new translation." But IF it is somehow new -- and, by the way, no translator is identified -- what exactly has been translated? What is new about it? It is still written in the difficult-to-understand Middle English Chaucer used, and apart from spelling (or misspelling?) "his" as "hise" in line-1 [see NOTE at end] and throwing in some extra commas, this is pretty much the standard version. It is handsomely formatted and has an active TOC, but no introduction, no clarifications of archaic words, nothing but the seemingly original Middle English text. Calling itself "the new translation" strongly suggests this has been translated into easier-to-understand Modern English, but such is not the case here. Chaucer certainly rates 5-stars, but I have deducted one for the misrepresentation.FYI: An excellent Modern English version will be found in the Kindle Store for $.99 by A. S. Kline.NOTE: The first line normally reads: "Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote...." The words "shoures" and "soote" are each two syllables in Middle English pronunciation; thus the entire line rightly has the number of accented syllables Chaucer intended. If "his" (a one-syllable word) were improperly changed to "hise" (turning it into a two-syllable word, pronounced his-uh) -- as is done here -- that adds an unintended and, therefore, unacceptable extra syllable. I have to assume this is merely a typo; but how many other such errors are contained herein?

If you are going to read The Canterbury Tales, this is the way to go. The Middle-English may seem intimidating at first, but it is easier than one might think to sound out and understand. Of course, the annotation helps quite a bit too. These tales and their frame perfectly capture medieval life with it's lively characters and various settings. Ranging from poetic diversions, to dramatic, to adventures, all the the way to gruesome fables, and plenty of very funny (and memorable) bawdy humor. This earthy group of classic stories has something for everyone. The modern translation is also worth having as a companion, but this fine paperback is the one for authenticity.

Let's get this clear at the start: This is a review of Jill Mann's edition of the Canterbury Tales in its Kindle version. (It's a shame that Amazon can't distinguish between different editions of the classics when posting reviews! -- hint!) About the Tales themselves, I'll say only that they are both a classic and a blast, and if you can handle the Middle English, you have to read them in that language. Jill Mann's editorial work is smart and thorough, too. The print edition is a bargain at the price -- again, if you're OK reading Middle English. The Kindle edition, though was a little clumsy to use -- though, to be fair, I don't see how all the glosses and notes could have been presented better in a e-book. Wait, yes I can. The glosses on individual words and expressions are easy to find; the more extensive notes, which are very valuable, are not. It shouldn't have been hard to add a marginal symbol to reference a Note. Hence it's only four stars, not five. But it may well be the best e-book version on the market.

Here is a brief synopsis. At the Tabard Inn, a tavern in Southwark, near London, the narrator joins a company of twenty-nine pilgrims. The pilgrims, like the narrator, are traveling to the shrine of the martyr Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The narrator gives a descriptive account of twenty-seven of these pilgrims, including a Knight, Squire, Yeoman, Prioress, Monk, Friar, Merchant, Clerk, Man of Law, Franklin, Haberdasher, Carpenter, Weaver, Dyer, Tapestry-Weaver, Cook, Shipman, Physician, Wife, Parson, Plowman, Miller, Manciple, Reeve, Summoner, Pardoner, and Host. (He does not describe the Second Nun or the Nun’s Priest, although both characters appear later in the book.) The Host, whose name, we find out in the Prologue to the Cook’s Tale, is Harry Bailey, suggests that the group ride together and entertain one another with stories. He decides that each pilgrim will tell two stories on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back. Whomever he judges to be the best storyteller will receive a meal at Bailey’s tavern, courtesy of the other pilgrims.I won't go into detail about all the tales that are told except to say that I found them witty, entertaining, and thoughtful.

The Friendship Project: The Catholic Woman's Guide to Making and Keeping Fabulous, Faith-Filled Friends, by Michele Faehnle Emily Jaminet

Review

"In an age that values social networks over face-to-face relationships, Michele Faehnle and Emily Jaminet make a compelling case for the lost art of spiritual friendship. They draw from a rich vein of personal experience and the lives of the saints to prove that the old proverb is still true: to have a friend, you must be a friend. Read this book to find out how." --Colleen Carroll Campbell, Author of My Sisters the Saints "The Bible says that 'a faithful friend is a sturdy shelter and he that has found one has found a treasure.' The same goes for finding this book! We are all a work in progress, and while finding virtuous friendships can be difficult, they are vital in life. The Friendship Project shows us just how to find and invest in these intentional and virtuous friendships." --Sarah Swafford, Speaker and author of Emotional Virtue: A Guide to Drama-Free Relationships "We live in a technology-driven world where people are instantly connected, yet in our own personal lives, we often feel isolated and alone. The Friendship Project is an inspiring and uplifting answer to how we can be internally connected and equipped to form lasting friendships—first with God and second with others. It underscores the truth that happiness lies in living a virtuous life." --Sr. John Dominic, O.P., Developer of Disciple of Christ, Education in Virtue

Being part of the pilot study for The Friendship Project has been such an inspiration to me to be a better friend at a time when one of my friends desperately needed a good friend. Several weeks ago, my neighbor and friend tragically and unexpectedly lost her 13 year old son. Inspired the The Friendship Project, I reached out...I tried to be the hands and feet of Jesus to her. I continue to reach out to her to offer support and love. The Friendship Project prompted me to extend my love to her deeper than I would have, if I had not been exposed to Emily and Michelle's inspiring message on friendship. Using the Eight Virtues, this book helps you to become the friend that God created you to be.

WONDERFUL AND INSPIRED!! Love this book - It has been a source of inspiration and a reminder of how important our faith filled riendships are to each other. God did not create us to on an island, but to be in relationship with one another, helping to grow in virtue and faith and ultimately be in heaven someday with Him. This study is a practical way to nurture fruitful, supportive, loving friendship that will continue on. It is also a wonderful way to examine the kind of friend that we have been and ways to improve despite our busy lives. Thank you for this fun to read resource that brings women together!! So blessed!!!

I absolutely loved this book! For Lent this year, I decided all of my reading would be spiritual in nature. The Friendship Project was my first book...and it did not disappoint. Each chapter is themed with a virtue (faith, hope, charity, prudence, gratitude, loyalty, generosity, and prayerfulness). Each chapter features an engaging personal story (the authors alternate every other chapter) which is tied to the virtue theme. Each chapter also includes the story of two saint friends, as well. There are even accompanying videos online you can watch. The book really made me think about my friendships, new and old; and how I could become a better friend. It was very inspiring! Although I had a stack of other spiritual books for my Lenten reading, I ended up ordering the authors’ other book, Divine Mercy for Moms, right after I finished The Friendship Project. This book would be great for a book club, and also as a gift for your girlfriends! Highly recommended!

This book was an easy read. Yet it is filled with helpful information and guidance on building faith in God. It is written so that it is very easy to read. It is a book, once read, I do believe and know I will reference it, over and over. I bought both the hard copy of the book and a kindle edition. Every time I read from it I learn something new. Very well written and not one of those struggle reads.

When you read the book, “The Friendship Project,” you will begin to see friendships in a new way, through the eyes of faith. The co-authors, Emily Jaminet and Michelle Faehnle, not only teach you how to develop the gift of spiritual friendship, but also encourage you to make it a vital part of your life. As they guide you through the examples of the Saints, you will discover that a godly friendship does not happen overnight. It is a work of grace which is attained as you let the Holy Spirit lead you along the road of virtue. You are never too young, and you are never too old, to undertake this project.Ellen Mongan

I loved this book so much!! I learned a lot about friendships of Saints and how we can use their example in our daily lives. I also found it helpful to learn about the virtues and how we can use them in friendships! My favorite one was how we can use prayer in our everyday lives, for example, when we are exercising. Thank you so much for directing this book to all people, I found it very helpful.

The Friendship Project is a much-needed addition to the lives of the Catholic women. As the world gets smaller and lonelier, Faehnle and Jaminet offer not only wisdom but also practical ways to make and maintain friendships. This book helped me to step out of my comfort zone, stop complaining and take concrete steps to finally reach out other women.

Awesome book!!! The book is great for small group discussion or individual study. I am recommending to all my friends.

Review

“Ben Hartman and I share similar approaches to growing vegetables; we both run highly productive farms using efficient techniques and well-designed space and procedures. With this book, however, I believe Ben has taken our craft to new levels with fresh ideas and different strategies. The information here provides incredible value for any small-scale farmer seeking a compact, yet profitable farm model. I highly recommend this book.”―Jean-Martin Fortier, author of The Market Gardener“All revolutions require a leap in consciousness plus a set of daily practices to sustain and gain the full benefits of the new consciousness. Ben Hartman is that rare person who could describe the lean farming revolution (in The Lean Farm) and then provide proven practices from his own farm in his new book, The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables, to help fellow revolutionaries grow good food in a lean way for the long term. Together these volumes describe all you need to know for a sustainable lean revolution on your farm. The rest is up to you.”―Jim Womack, founder and senior advisor, Lean Enterprise Institute“This manual of growing follows the lean principles of Ben and Rachel’s farm, its pages are jam-packed with useful advice for efficient organic growing. ‘Lean’ is a great paradigm for directing your time and energy into a fully effective approach, whether in a large garden or small farm. I was fascinated to read all the examples of seeding, planting, and harvesting, and the gorgeous photos show the high productiveness of these methods.”―Charles Dowding, coauthor of No Dig Organic Home & Garden “Everyone strives for efficiency in vegetable farming, but Ben Hartman has actually achieved it. In his lean farming books, he provides a clear-headed approach to achieving efficiency of space, time, and resources. Every vegetable farmer who wants to be profitable and enjoy the farming life would do well to read these books closely.”―Lynn Byczynski, author of Market Farming Success and The Flower Farmer“Ben Hartman is a true innovator for the small farm. The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables takes the lean techniques from his first book even further with new innovations and greater detail. I have been eagerly awaiting this addendum so that I can start trying these practices on my farm. This book is a must for any market grower who wants to push the boundaries of profitability while finding life balance at the same time.”―Curtis Stone, author of The Urban Farmer“Ben Hartman clearly illustrates how the continual process of lean thinking can benefit every farm. From targeted market planning driven by what customers truly value, to effective and efficient production from planning through harvest, and ultimately to putting money into your bank account, this book is full of practical and inventive ideas that will help your farm prosper.”―Richard Wiswall, author of The Organic Farmer’s Business Handbook “This is a great book on the methods that make Clay Bottom Farm a successful compact farm, explaining the thinking behind those methods. Ben gives clear, detailed descriptions of the day-to-day systems, and further illustrates the concepts he first laid out in The Lean Farm. This companion, The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables, reveals a refined system that makes a great jumping off point for any aspiring grower, and gives seasoned growers ideas for how to improve their own systems.”―Josh Volk, author of Compact Farms“Another gem from Ben Hartman. The Lean Farm introduced a dynamic new way of thinking about small farm businesses, pointing us in the right direction. Now, The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables gives us the detail, specifics, and tricks of the trade that show us how to execute lean strategies on a small farm. Ben is a key entrepreneur in diverse, sustainable, small farm agriculture, and is emerging as the Midwest’s heir apparent to Eliot Coleman. The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables is an indispensable resource for all small farmers, new or experienced, young or old.”―Steve Hallett, professor of horticulture, Purdue University; author of The Efficiency Trap; coauthor of Life without Oil“Applications of lean principles to a new arena are often confusing and shallow. The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables is clear and deep. This book is based on real-world experience, drawing on lean principles to develop a radically new approach to farming that gets you more for less.”―Jeffrey Liker, author of The Toyota Way“I’m an impatient reader but always make time for Ben’s writings. Every time I found myself wondering about a nugget of detail in The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables it would appear within the next paragraph or two. This book fully explores production details that most authors skim over, and in vegetable production―as in any craft―details matter.”―Pete Johnson, founder, Pete’s Greens, Craftsbury, VermontÂ

All market gardeners need a physical copy of this book in their collection of practical guides to the process of running a market garden successfully. That being said you should start with and also own Ben's previous book The Lean Farm: How to minimize waste... . You will learn the principles of the Lean methodology and how they can be employed in small scale agriculture. With this current book you then can see how they are applied in detail. Those of you who are familiar with the principles of Essence and Application (aka Substance and Function, ti-yong) from Chinese philosophy will find Ben's companion books neatly embody this pair of concepts in contemporary agriculture. Certainly great innovators in market gardening like JM Fortier, Curtis Stone, and Richard Perkins all reference parts of Lean concepts in their writings and teaching, but Ben has taken the Essence of Lean and explained it clearly and concisely within the context of market gardening. This Guide to Growing Vegetables is the Application of Lean. Together both books provide a comprehensive framework to (quoting Diego Footer) "do some epic you know what".As a market gardener both books helped our farm eliminate 'muda' - waste at all stages of farming. I shrank the farm by a quarter and made more revenue and had more time. This is directly due to both of Ben's books. I am still learning and plan to implement more Lean techniques. I can't emphasize enough the effectiveness of these techniques in transforming the small market garden business.Certainly there are many "have to have" farming books out there. If market gardeners could only have a handful of books, 2 books would have to be Ben's books. There is so much in agriculture to consider, this book will continually help you to bring things to their essence to eliminate waste and grow excellent vegetables.

As a third year market gardener, I wish that I would have had this book three years ago. It would have saved me considerable time, money and anxiety. There are tons of books and websites about farming and gardening, but most are not comprehensive and succinct at the same time. Ones that are comprehensive are verbose but fail to include critical data. For example, I often hear or read "I seed these in early May" but are they in Texas or Maine??? Who knows? There is not a single farmer that I know of that's getting rich from growing and selling vegetables. All of us are doing it on a shoestring budget. However, there is a difference between price and value. One chapter that I spent more time on than the others relates to the paper pot transplanter. Other than my expenditure for deer fencing, a purchase of this type of transplanter was going to be most pricey investment. I appreciate this chapter more than the others and was able to make the investment without anxiety. The data, the charts, the narrative are excellent! From start to finish, this book is concise, straightforward, and pertinent. Why no one before Ben came up with the applying lean principles to farming is beyond me.

Here are four reasons why I like this book (as well as Hartman's first one).1) Hartman is a very good writer; his explanations are clear, concise, and concrete. 2) The editors and proofreaders did their jobs well; I noticed only one minor inconsistency in all the information provided in the 240+ pages of this book. 3) Like other books from Chelsea Green Publishing, this book is manufactured well, with a sturdy cover, quality paper, excellent printing, and a legible, readable type face. 4) It's clear that Hartman has studied and thought a lot about Lean thinking and methods; to learn the subject, he's gone directly to the works of the original teachers, people such as Toyota's Taiichi Ohno (1912-1990). Anyone interested in Lean Thinking will benefit from reading how Hartman applied these concepts to farming. The master-apprentice relationship is where a student lives the life of a particular craft next to a mentor. Since we all can't be Ben Hartman's apprentice, his two books are a great place to start.

Compared to Ben's first book, this one is 10 times better. There are so many examples of farming efficiency along with tons of growing tips. Well worth reading for any small scale farming operation.

Good for those of us who want to take gardening a step further.

Where would I be without Ben Hartman's books? I don't know and I don't want to know. He understands what is going on in the brain of farmers and what is important and what is not. Every word is thoughtful, resonates, and makes an effect on my farm. When I have questions, the answer is usually there. This book has been a huge help for our farm in many ways. Worth every penny times a few thousand. Thank you Ben Hartman!

Excellent information for any small scale grower with techniques I am going to apply in my gardening.

I’ve spent two years as an apprentice on two different farms, and after reading this book I feel like I completed another apprenticeship with out actually being onsite. This book clarified many of the questions I have while planning for my own future farm. It also convinced me that bigger isn’t always better. I read this on my kindle but I plan on getting a hard copy too. Highly recommended!
