In "Unstoppable", Bill Nye argues, "A certain amount of global warming and weather disruption is baked in; in a word, it is unstoppable. But you know what? So are we. Humans, and human progress, are also unstoppable" (p. 326). There are three main points to his argument. First, he explains all of the overwhelming scientific evidence of climate change to prove, once and for all, its existence to any doubter who may have picked up his book. Second, Nye examines all of the different proposed methods for cutting back on carbon emissions, from the unrealistic (like giant solar reflectors in space) to existent technologies that need only be refined (such as better windmills, batteries, electric cars, and the technology Nye himself uses to effect a form of energy independence in his own home). The final part of Nye's argument, which runs throughout "Unstoppable", is a call to younger readers, whom he calls "The Next Great Generation," to take up this challenge and solve it. Though they cannot stop global warming, they can slow its escalation and minimize its impact.Like Nye's previous book, "Undeniable", this book focuses on big ideas and represents and appeal from the author directly to his readers to stop fearing or denying science because it only serves to hurt us as a society. His great sense of optimism and wit permeates every chapter so that even those portions that casual readers may find dull have their share of entertainment. As Nye proved on the "Science Guy" show, humor is an effective tool in education. That said, he is serious when the topic calls for it. "Unstoppable" should serve as a wake-up call to readers around the world to get actively engaged not only in petitioning their governments to do something about climate change, but to implement many of the small-scale ideas that Nye is already using in his own home. Together, we can change the world!

When I first purchased this book I thought it strictly about climate change, global warming. Although the issue of climate change is clearly the main motivator of the text, more emphasis is placed on methods of efficiency, which for the most part mediates climate issues. That being said, I do not recommend this book to anybody who expects to read it and get a comprehensive summary on what climate change is and the evidence for it. Many ideas to improve the earth are covered and proposed, such as: carbon-free vehicles, efficient production of clean water, clean energy generation and use, and effective energy storage to name a few.Certain other things were interesting:I found it fascinating that Bill officially took a side on GMOs: he's pro GMO now. If anyone follows it closely, you might know that before he was unsure and skeptical of the benefits of GMOs when compared to possible unintended consequences. After visiting a few Monsanto and research facilities (and gonig to an anti-GMO rally), his mind changed. Most of the resistance he has seen to genetically modified foods has less to do with the perceived safety of the food or ecosystems but with a basic mistrust in large corporations. An interesting fact: about 30 percent of the earth is land for us plants and animals; humans farm about 11 percent of that dry land area; and yet 1 and 7 people are hungry. Its not that we don't have enough food he says, because experts estimate only about 55 percent of the calories we produce on farms get successfully incorporated into a humans diets. The only one other species with the power to change the climate of an entire planet, thats the cyanobacteria better known as the blue-green algae.Carbon dioxide molecules allow visible light with certain wavelengths to pass through but block the reradiated light rays that are of a different wavelength (infrared). This is why reducing CO2 emissions is vital towards improving accelerated climate change. Some other interesting methods are reflecting heat into the atmosophere through hydrosol, the name given to when nature produces bubbles in a liquid. Also increasing the albedo (amount of incoming light reflected back into space) by making white roofs and pavement.Bill's sticking points are his lack of transition, despite the text being subdivided by so many chapters, and his frequent excursions; his lack of notes; and his lack of visuals which would have helped envision a lot, especially as a young reader. Positively speaking, he has a large expanse of knowledge and possesses good didactic skills - the text reads smoothly and is conversationally toned.3.9/5

I recommend this to all students, educators, past and present. You and I live on the same planet, this is our home, we must do something before it is too late.If you are a climate denier, please read, the science is there, it is all around us. Wouldn't it be better to err on the side of caution, rather than when it has caused damage to you personally?Though Mr. Nye and I disagree on certain concepts I whole heartedly support the ideas found in this book, especially the chapters regarding NASA and NASCAR.This should be required reading for everyone.

Lots of information to get you thinking. I don't understand even if people don't think climate change is true why don't we develop new technologies that are clean? It is a no-brainer to me lets get ahead of the game and be the ones manufacturing these devices.Lots of subjects, lots of information, best part Bill is the one reading it! Nothing better then hearing his little play on words and jokes in his own voice. I have seen where some people have pointed out some issues with battery power, energy per rate, and so on but to me those are minor things that will not take away from someone wanting to learn more about green energy and making a brighter future. (Yes for a science guy book they should not have made it to the final copy and print but for every day readers I don't think you will notice the issues. If it gets you wanting to know more then Unstoppable did its job and got you on your way to learning more.)

This book is easy to understand and fun to read. You don't need a degree in engineering or physics to understand the ideas presented in this book. It takes an idea which, regrettably, seems insurmountable at times and breakes it down into bite-sized pieces that leave you feeling hopeful and ready for action. While there are some futuristic technology discussed, most of the potential change would come from existing technology. The suggestions in this book are not only possible, they're doable. Right now.

#24,918 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I wrestled in high school so when I decided to join a bjj class, I thought it would be an easy transition. However, I think I found it harder to learn moves and positions than someone who had no grappling experience at all. Jiu-Jitsu University helped me rewire my brain to break bad habits and laid out a blue print on what to do in situations but more importantly....why to do it. Ribeiro describes in easy to follow steps with pictures highlighted in green but also shows common misconceptions highlighted in red, basically the do's and the dont's for a sequence of moves. This book emphasizes that a white belts main goal is survival. I can honestly say this book helped me improve my game tremendously by teaching me to close many gaps and avoid unfavorable situations that may lead to submissions. This book has 368 pages and covers what each belt should focus on. Like many other reviewers say, if you're just starting out in bjj this is the book to definitely buy. DRG

This is the first book I purchased upon starting BJJ - disclaimer, I'm only at year two now. It should be clear that this book covers NO-STRIKING grappling. This is not Japanese Jiu Jitsu, this is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This does not cover self-defense or MMA but could carry over with modification - first and foremost this is an instructional on, I would say, "competition" BJJ. For example, when you are in bottom mount, you know he is not going to punch you in the face so you can and should keep your elbows down and close to your body. If it were self-defense/MMA - you'd probably want to bridge as soon as possible and trap and roll but I don't know enough about that. I do not doubt that Saulo or any competent BJJer could handle himself in a striking environment but that is not what this book is about.Overall the book is beautiful, printed on thick paper with large color photos. The book is divided up by belt and the techniques Saulo associated with each belt:White - Survival, just concentrate on not getting tapped.Blue - EscapingPurple - Guard PositionsBrown - Passing the GuardBlack - SubmissionsI think his rationale is genius. Everyone's natural talents and skills differ, but I know for me, I spent a whole lot of time in inferior positions when I first started and rarely got the chance to even try for a submission. So reading from a Pro that the art of survival was worth mastering in of itself gave me a great perspective, helped with motivation and setting expectations. It became that much more fun to go train with an eye on mastering survival first and paying my dues before expecting that I would hit submissions and reversals. His rationale in a nutshell for mastering your survival positions: Once you are confident your opponent cannot tap you, you are more relaxed and this frees up your energy and time to concentrate on escaping, passing, positioning, and submitting.Saulo points out many details about his survival positions: your preemptive position so that you can safely chill out while in an inferior position - or at least really make the other guy work for the tap. When I first started, I grappled nearly exclusively in no-gi. Yet, while this book is 100% gi, I would say most of the book's concepts do well for no-gi, save for the submission section which is gi focused of course. The basics are valid for no-gi and gi. For example, escaping with no-gi is just like with gi - it's even easier since there is less friction.I have to say, some of his points are subtle and are hidden in the photos - I wish these were a little clearer. For example, in his section covering bottom mount survival, he lies slightly on his side [instead of completely on his back] - at first glance, this was imperceptible to me, perhaps because the gi is naturally baggy and so that subtly is lost. That point and other similar points could have been more explicit, perhaps with no-gi complementary photos or written in text. I wish there were bullet points of key points, that would have been great. Overall though, you can glean a lot of information from the photos if you go over them again and again. It's all the little things! The book is huge. There are many positions and techniques that have never even presented themselves to me yet - he gives you a whole lot to think about and work on week after week.At least one time in the book, the Point of View of instruction changes from Saulo to his brother - this was VERY confusing to me until I figured out what was going on. In other words, for most of the book, the text is describing what Saulo is doing or should do - then in another technique it switches to Xande's perspective. That's fine to switch it up, but there was no notice to the reader that I can recall. No biggie if you know this. Now that I've had a bit more experience and have, hopefully, learned a few things, I know some of the techniques taught in the book do not work for me, or just aren't my specialty and I've found other tools that better suit me. Everyone's game is a little different. For example, there are more than a few ways to escape side mount or get the clock choke [ all the little things] and everyone has his favorite particular way that works for him. So Saulo is showing what works for him but it might not work for you. I wouldn't expect any book to show me THE definitive way to do BJJ, but this definitively a worthwhile foundation. My personal example here is that Saulo emphasizes the bridge a whole bunch for his escapes. If you are bottom side mount he would say to bridge, hip escape to make room, then recover guard. I've found this can be difficult if your opponent is a reasonable size bigger than you and really know has to weigh down. The solution is to combo your escape techniques, not just depend on the standard bridge.Prefacing each chapter is some great writing on his fighting philosophy and some nice stories - great addition to the book and really gives it character and intimacy.Overall, a solid book. I would give it 5 stars if there were more text on individual techniques in the form of bullet points and the switch between Saulo and Xande was absent. The Survival chapter is worth the price of the book itself. Beginners would do well to get this book just for that section.

This book has been a fantastic find. I had no previous martial arts experience prior to joining the jiu jitsu gym I currently attend. I regularly attended classes twice a week for over a year. However, I started to get discouraged and felt like I was stagnating and making the same mistakes over and over. I also felt like I was missing something. I came across this book and decided to order it and I have been thrilled with the progress I have been able to make. I go over chapters as often as possible and I feel like I have been able to close so many gaps in my defense that I didn't even know I had. Maybe this was because I didn't go to class enough but I'm more inclined to think that it is more because my coach simply doesn't cover some of the more basic stuff because he doesn't want to bore the higher belts. Regardless, the higher belts have a much harder time submitting me and I have begun to develop my offensive game (at last!!) because I am confident in my defense. If you feel like you are stagnating in your jiu jitsu buy this book and READ and STUDY it. Lots of great pictures and illustrations, as well as explanations.

I'm 7 months in on my bjj journey and I'm a 2 stripe white belt. This book is the best bjj book I've came across yet. This book will help you feel in gaps where maybe your professor hasn't shown you yet or things maybe something you've forgotten. Alot of emphasis on defense/survival. It goes into great detail with pictures to guide you. Each chapter is broken down into belt color. Although not meaning that what's in the black belt chapter a white shouldn't learn. It's really 368 pages of pure goodness. To give more of an idea of what you're getting I'll break down each chapter.Chapter 1 (White Belt): SurvivalSurvival from the back, all fours, mount, side control, knee-on-belly. Give little details that make huge differences. Also talks about common misconceptions on each.Chapter 2 (Blue Belt) EscapesEscapes from chokes, joint locks, and positional escapes.Chapter 3 (Purple Belt) The GuardBreaks down all types of guards, butterfly, spider, cross grip, de la riva, sit -up, reverse de la riva, and halfChapter 4 (Brown Belt) Guard PassingPasig closed guard, guard from standing, core open guard passes, butterfly guard passes, and many more.Chapter 5 (Black Belt) SubmissionsShows all types of submissions from every positionChapter breakdown does it no justice, because there is so many details that's missed. This would be great for white and blue belts, but even the upper rank belt would benefit as a reminder of the small technical details that we forget. If you're like me, if im not doing something everyday I'll forget, so this is what I turn to along with YouTube. If you're interested in this book, buy it. I put it off for about a month before I bought it, but I can tell you wholeheartedly this is a fantastic book and 100% satisfied that I bought it.
