Danielle Barnhart is the recipient of the 2015 Donald Everett Axinn Award in Poetry, and coordinates programming for Adelphi University’s MFA Program in Creative Writing. Iris Mahan is a graduate of Adelphi University’s MFA Program, where she was the recipient of The Robert Muroff Scholarship in Creative Writing. In particular I adored the work of Denice Frohman (“Hunger,†“A Woman’s Placeâ€), Kimberley Johnson (“Femaleâ€), Jacqueline Jones (“Civil Rightsâ€), Kim Addonizio “To the Woman Crying Uncontrollably in the Next Stallâ€), Laura Theobald (“Getting a UTIâ€), Elizabeth Acevdeo (“An Open Letter to the Protestors Outside the Planned Parenthood Near My Jobâ€), Ada Limón (“Serviceâ€), Stacey Waite (“The Four Nights She’s Goneâ€), Patricia Smith (“What She Thinks as She Waits by the Doorâ€), Ruth Irupé Sanabria (“On Mate & the Workâ€), Mary Ruefle (“Woodtangleâ€), Rachel McKibbens (“Shivâ€), and Lauren K. Alleyne (“Ode to the Pantsuitâ€).Usually I prefer reading ebooks on my Kindle, since it’s easier to highlight text and take notes this way, but this particular book looks its best on an ipad or other full-color device. There are some neat black and white protest photos here and there, and the formatting tends to stay true to the original.

This collection ripped my heart out, sewed it back in, boiled it in oil and healed it again.It's ridiculous how 1 book can hold so many emotions."The thing about it is, once interior parts of us are brought outward, there is no way to put them back inside."I felt so much while reading this: power, heart wrenching compassion, whimsy, anger, and an over all heavy yet comforting emotional drain (is that even a thing?)."Today how I resent the way sadness and loss are souvenirs we're forced to carry with us."This is definitely something I want EVERYONE to read!!!"Don't begrudge me my sashay walk, it's all I got sometimes."
Since April is National Poetry Month, I decided to read this new collection of feminist poems for the month. A lot of reviews are saying how 'timely' this collection is, and that's absolutely true. But I'd also add that feminist poetry has always been timely and necessary.What struck me first about this collection is that I'd never heard of or read any of the poets who contributed. I don't try to keep up-to-date with current poets, but I do regularly read current poetry, so I was surprised and pleased I didn't recognize any of the names. The poems range a lot thematically, from sexual abuse to current politics to descriptions of loving female bonds. They also range in style, some leaning toward abstract, others much more concrete, some lyrical, some intentionally jarring and broken.I never really connected to any of the pieces, and I worry that's because I read it as an egalley, and the formatting wasn't that great. This is a book I recommend reading in print. And I may end up rereading it as such.Thanks to Netgalley and OR Books for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
