Abdul-Matin highlights major universal Islamic principles that make it clear that one of the major responsibilities God has for humanity is to maintain balance on the earth.He also presents major examples of efforts currently doing good things on this front.

In Green Deen: What Islam Teaches About Protecting the Planet, Ibrahim Abdul -Matin attempts to show how an environmentalist/conservationist belief system and lifestyle are "deeply imbedded in the Muslim tradition from a variety of perspectives." Abdul-Matin is an American-born Muslim who attended Hamza Yusuf's new Zaytuna College in Berkeley, California before returning to his native New York to further his education and pursue work in line with his family tradition as a community activist or policy advisor. His thesis is that six Islamic ethical principles or ideas form a framework of an environmentalist ethos. The six principles he addresses are tawhid, which he describes as the Oneness of God and which he often expounds in a sense of the interconnectedness of all subjects of Creation, ayat, or the idea of signs of God being everywhere including in humanity and nature, khalifah, which he views as the idea of humans as stewards of the Earth, amana, described as a divine trust for humanity to protect the planet, adl, interpreted in context as a call toward just use of resources and treatment of Creation, and mizan, explained as living in balance with the whole of Creation.After a nice forward by Muslim Congressman Keith Ellison, Abdul-Matin divides his discussion into four main parts: waste, energy, water and food. For each, he briefly outlines the environmental issues and tries to show how American Muslims are working to solve these issues by highlighting certain individuals as examples. He also sometimes refers to hadith or Qur'anic verses or in some other way tries to connect one or more of the six principles (tawhid, ayat, amana, adl, khalifah, and mizan) to solutions.As far as the quality of this item for someone interested in following a "Green Deen", a way of life that emphasizes responsible use of resources as part of and in line with Islamic teachings, his advice and outlines are mostly rather pedestrian. The historic and scientific background information in this book tends to be drastically oversimplified. The author fails to address any scientific debate over some claims made, and he makes sweeping gestures around history, at one point seemingly suggesting that there has been one smooth arc of progress from humanity as environmental devils toward fulfillment of the Islamic ideal of humans as proper stewards of the world's resources. However, as an overview or introduction, these aspects are adequate.The writer finally seems to catch his stride about 1/3 of the way into the book. He presents many solid, standard ideas for topics such as making a "Green Mosque" through energy audits, weatherizing, adding off-grid energy sources, avoiding use of disposable dishes and bottled water, incorporating ride-sharing plans, composting food waste, using low energy appliances, getting LEED certification on new construction, growing a community garden, and so on. He also does a fair job of describing a relationship between the modern political landscape and the unjust appropriation of natural resources by some governments and makes an impassioned argument against bottled water. He further succeeds at demonstrating through example that many American Muslims are working on environmental issues in a variety of contexts, although the book would've been well-served to have had even more such examples.Abdul-Matin admits in his introduction to a few limitations that do affect the overall quality of the work. His attempts to tie his chosen six Islamic principles to his overall discussion are often weak. The connections are there, but insufficiently supported in the writing. He becomes extremely repetitive, beginning sections with nearly identical wording and retelling some facts and stories multiple times. The questions he ends chapters with often leave them feeling unfinished rather than bringing them to a satisfying conclusion. He excessively uses the phrase "Green Deen" as if it were a religion or mantra of its own, separate from Islam, in contradiction to his correct contention that Islam and a conservationist stance are already perfectly aligned. And, he presents some content that involves fiqh in ways that may be incorrect for some schools of thought. For example, while making a strong case for organic and free range zabiha meat, he nonetheless claims that eating meat slaughtered by People of the Book is religiously acceptable - a claim that is certainly not a unanimously held position.As a whole, this work lacks in sophistication or nuance, but succeeds in filling a necessary niche in the available literature. A reader will find some content of worth in this effort, although may not be satisfied by the book as a whole. A youth group interested in leading its community toward more environmentally sound practices may find some inspiration and ideas in its pages and may benefit from the effort to employ an Islamic foundation, but will not find a clear, practical guide on how to accomplish its goals; the author leaves it to the reader to figure out how to put the ideals, ideas and examples into action in one's own particular context.

With this book, Abdul-Matin brings Islam out of the shadows, and also brings it back home from the Middle East. He writes in a very accessible, easy to read style. He brings Islam into the mainstream of American Life by discussing very practical and common sense approaches to tackling one of the biggest problems of our era (waste, overconsumption,preservation of our planet).Religion can be relevant beyond just dogma, by helping us to re-frame how we look at our problems. The author is a native born, second generation Muslim, educated, with a sense of civic responsibility, helps me to look at Islam in completely different light. Highly recommended.

Ibrahim does a fabulous job providing the reader with a faith-based perspective on the environmentalism movement. His book is full of interesting and thought-provoking concepts, as well as practical steps to implement a more "green deen". He does a great job writing to a wide audience, whether Muslim or not, environmental activist or not, the book has something for everyone. For those with little or no background in Islam or the environmental movement, Green Deen discusses not only the basics, but also deeper concepts that connect the two spheres. For those who have more knowledge of Islam and/or the environmental movement, Green Deen also provides interesting insights, such as the notion of the earth being a mosque, and the Prophet Muhammad's serious concern with taking care of the planet because of mankind's role as stewards of the earth. And finally, Green Deen is an easy read. Once you pick it up, it's easy to get lost in its content and message.

I very much appreciate this book because it connects two subjects I care so much about: faith and Earth. It is well written with good depth and insight and it really motivates the reader to take action which is what books in this subject area should do. There is a strong emphasis on our roles as stewards of the planet and all that is living on Earth and I think that is really well illustrated with concrete examples that show what the world would look like if everyone took the time to take good care of our living space and others around us. I am grateful to have been able to find such a wonderful book and I am buying more for my friends and relatives as a gift. It is well worth reading and I am already changing my habits to do a better job of taking good care of the Earth and I really feel connected and inspired by this book.

In Green Deen, the author grounds human worth to our innate connection to the Creator and all created things. How we treat the planet is a reflection of how we treat ourselves. Green Deen is a simple yet deep reminder to reassess our actions. This book explores how the economy affects our green habits. It makes an interesting case that capitalism and consumerism don't have to be anti-environmentalism if practiced differently. I believe this book shows people of all walks of life how to connect green living to their own ideologies and style of living by giving compelling examples of Muslims incorporating the two.

To begin with, we must observe on important factor:Who is this Michael Shapiro fellow?He is not a well known author or historian. We can assume that one day the idea popped in his head, "why don't a write a book called The Jewish 100!"Of course, there are many interesting people described: some known, some not. But the ranking is just painful.There is such a ridiculous combination of the "most influential Jews of all time". There are biblical Jews, scholars, sages, etc; there are Jews like Jesus for example who began Christianity; there are completely irreligious Jews who nobody ever heard of anyway; there are Zionists, and on and on.To rank a hundred such personalities would be a formidable task for the greatest historian, let alone some Shapiro person who, according to "about the author", knows about nothing but music.But then there is another serious flaw: not who is a Jew, but who is influential? There are of course many famous and extremely influential Jewish minds, such as Moses, Marx, Einstein, Jesus, Freud, and more - but Shapiro runs short of 100. Though, if he were a real historian or at least more competent in history class, he may have got 100 names: but he includes scores of musicians, actors, and even athletes that are neither influential nor known.Thus Shapiro has flopped considerably in two areas: ranking, and choice of people. Historically, this book is of no interest: however you may seek to borrow it if you are researching one of the 100. Its definitely not worth buying as it doesn't live up to its title (except maybe for kids).

Shapiro's broad sweeping work contains rankings of those whom he considers the top 100 Jewish thinkers and movers of western civilization. His book is not designed to be a detailed analysis of these lives but instead, a snap shot commentary on how each individual impacted their area of expertise that influenced their Jewish community and the world. The rankings of course are subjective and arbitrary and are not that helpful as to why one person's contributions is ranked higher than another. One must remember that this work is not an intellectual tome but a nice easy to read book to see who's who in the Jewish world. This work contains many flaws and arouses some serious questions. 1. Very few women are contained in the book. Are we to assume that Jewish women on the whole had very little impact in the western world? 2. Shapiro is a great apologist for Christianity as he glosses over the negative impact of that religion upon Judism. Granted Jesus, Mary, Saul and Judas were Jews but the religion that was spawned from them resulted in a negative impact on Jews world wide. Christians baited Jews as Christ killers, forced conversions upon Jews (inquisition) and through their silence allowed the extermination of 6 million Jews. 3. One of the most important questions is how does one determine who is a Jew? Although many of the names are famous, some were of mixed marriages ( Proust, Bohr, etc.) where Judism was absent in their lives and they converted to Christianity. Also included were those who denied their heritage or were non-practicing. Should they have been included regardless of their Jewish background? In any case this book is a good resource book for young teenagers, young adults and other people who wasnt a broad survey of Jews who impacted upon western civilization

We live in a world in which there are two billion Christians and around thirteen million Jews. We live in a world after the Holocaust where more than one- third of the Jewish people were murdered. We also live in a world in which the Jewish people are presently under attack from a radical Islamic fundamentalism aimed at destroying the Jewish state of Israel. We live in a world in which thousands of Christian missionaries feel that it is more important to convert the thirteen million Jews than it is to work either on themselves, or on the other four billion people of the planet who are neither Christians or Jews.All this being the case it seems to me that the author had a duty to write a work that would strengthen Jewish identity and peoplehood, and not make it more questionable. Thus it seems to me completely insensitive of the author to put so many founders of Christianity as 'most influential Jews' I think that they belong rather in a book called ' Most Influential Christians'.Secondly, does it really make much sense to put the creators of Superman in a book with Biblical figures?Jewish history ( a third point)is filled with remarkable figures who make some of the American pop figures the author chooses small and insignificant.The author, it seems to me, might better have done a book on the them ( Jews who have done the most good for their own people.)

The first is that nearly all incidents of overthrow were instigated by, done at the behest of or in one instance literally performed by one or more multinational corporations. In Guatemala it was United Fruit, in Iran it was the oil industries, in Chile it was ITT and Anaconda. The pattern of leftist leaders nationalizing industry and then finding themselves removed is repeated over and over again. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez would be advised to be very careful. Regime change has been defended as a bulwark against encroaching communism or socialism but as the author states overthrows are performed, "mainly for economic reasons - specifically, to establish, promote, and defend the right of Americans to do business around the world without interference" Regime change has always required the help of a certain percentage of the public in a country, generally the wealthy elites fearing the growing power of the lower and middle class.The other issue is American morality versus "realism". Does the end justify the means and do our laws of justice cease at the border? In Iran, Guatemala, and Chili democratically elected leaders were replaced with repressive regimes. Perhaps the worst of the all was Augustus Pinochet in Chile who went on to torture and kill thousands of leftist. In Panama, Noriega was supported by the Reagan administration as long as he continued to support the Contras. Reagan also supported the corrupt Marco government in the Philippines because they permitted U.S. Naval bases to operate off the islands saying, "I don't know anything more important than those bases" I guess that would include basic human rights.The third point is that short term solutions tend to cause long term problems. Perhaps nothing the United States has ever done has caused more problems than deposing the popular Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh in favor of the Shah. The damage it created and loss of American prestige in the Middle East has been incalculable and for what? Stifling democracy and even capitalism in countries like Honduras makes the United States looks disingenuous and oppressive. Some of the blame for Castro's repressive government may lie with the United States. What Castro learned was that the United States with the help of the CIA would never allow a left leaning Democracy in Latin America so he became understandably paranoid and worked overtime to eliminate any perceived threat.Overthrow isn't just an important book it's also well written and engaging. It certainly is not a feel good book. It's like turning over a stone and seeing the mud and bugs underneath but when we bury the past we are doomed to repeat it. Would American's have been so quick to support regime change in Iraq if people were more aware of the disasters of the past? Understanding and knowing our worst mistakes is at least as important as remembering our successes. With America's opinion ratings overseas at perhaps its lowest level ever perhaps it's time for the entire nation to reflect and maybe work to have our deeds match our rhetoric.

Most Americans are outraged by Russian interference in our 2016 election. That’s because we hold dear our right to self-determination without another country determining the outcome. On the other hand, the USA has a long history of not showing the same kind of respect for the self-determination of other nations that we expect for ourselves. This book describes in shocking detail the fourteen times our country has overthrown legitimate governments – some duly elected – around the world. This is not dry history, however; Kinzer’s retelling reads like a suspense novel.The first instance came in 1893 when the American ambassador in Hawaii conspired with American planters to overthrow the native government of Queen Liliuokalani. It took 100 years for the U.S. government to recognize the error of its ways. A resolution passed Congress and signed by President Clinton in 1993 states that Congress, “apologizes to native Hawaiians on behalf of the people of the United States for the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom on Jan. 17, 1893,” and for the subsequent “deprivation of the rights of Native Hawaiians to self-determination.”Unfortunately, there has been no similar apology to the peoples of Iran, Cuba, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Guatamala, Vietnam and Puerto Rico. Hawaii is the 50th state. If Puerto Rico ever becomes the 51st, perhaps then another apology will be forthcoming.Following Hawaii, the second overthrow came at the end of the Spanish-American War, when the McKinley administration decided to take control of several Spanish colonies, instead of liberating them to govern themselves. The “consent of the governed” did not matter to most Americans when it came to Cubans, Puerto Ricans and Filipinos.Before Congress agreed to declare war on Spain, the Teller Amendment had to be added to gain sufficient support. That Amendment declares that “the people of the island of Cuba are, and of right ought to be, free and independent. The United States hereby disclaims any disposition or intention to exercise sovereignty, jurisdiction, or control over said island.” Once the war ends. the USA intends “to leave the government and control of the island to its people.”Cuban rebels had been actively fighting Spanish rule three years, and they expected to gain their promised independence fighting alongside the Americans. Nonetheless, the Teller Amendment was quickly discarded at the end of the war as McKinley announced that the USA would rule Cuba.The new policy was embodied in the Platt Amendment of 1901, “a crucial document in the history of American foreign policy,” because versions of “plattismo” were subsequently applied to many nations in Central America and the Caribbean. Under this Amendment, which was adopted with only Republican votes, the USA agreed to end its occupation of Cuba as soon as Cubans accepted a constitution giving the U.S. the rights to maintain military bases, to supervise the treasury, and “the right to intervene for the preservation of Cuban independence or the maintenance of a government adequate for the protection of property and individual liberty.”Cubans weren’t the only Latin Americans denied self-determination. Similar domination happened to Nicaragua and Honduras, initially to protect the monopolies of a handful of American banana corporations. This interference led to generations of dictators, conflict and death. To this day, Honduras has the world’s highest murder rate, in part due to American policies.The greatest tragedy happened to the Philippines. The Filipino guerilla leader, Emilio Aguinaldo, understood that his people were promised their independence by Admiral Dewey, who later swore he made no such commitment. The USA paid $20 million to Spain for the islands. Meanwhile, the rebels had elected an assembly, produced a constitution, and proclaimed the independent Republic of the Philippines in 1899, with Aguinaldo as president. The new government was determined to defend its independence. McKinley had other plans.The war to suppress Philippine independence lasted three years and led to tens of thousands of deaths. Recent estimates put the total at 250,000. U.S. troops used torture and massacre of civilians suspected of aiding the guerillas. The New York Post wrote that American troops “have been pursuing a policy of wholesale and deliberate murder.” This war was one of the worst episodes in Filipino history. Filipinos were denied their independence until 1946.The first CIA overthrow of a foreign government was in Iran in 1953. The second came the following year in Guatamala. Both countries had democratically elected governments, and both were forcibly replaced by dictators – the Shah in one, and a former army officer in the other. The long-term effects were tragic.The next target for overthrow was in 1963 when JFK decided to remove the Diem regime that the USA had installed in South Vietnam. A friend of America, Diem was murdered and the war was lost anyway.Chile was the next target. The CIA had interfered in elections there since 1964 to prevent a socialist from winning. After Salvador Allende won, the CIA fomented his overthrow in 1973, installing a brutal dictator, Gen. Pinochet.Other targets were the governments in Grenada in 1983, Panama in 1989, and Iraq in 2003. Kinzer compares George W. Bush to William McKinley: both believed they were morally justified, and neither anticipated the deadly insurgencies that followed in the Philippines and in Iraq.“Do as I say, not as I do,” isn’t persuasive for children, much less to the rest of the world. American officials frequently assert the right to intervene militarily or otherwise whenever and where ever it is deemed in the American interest to do so, even to protect the interest of American corporations. “In almost every case,” writes Kinzer, “overthrowing the government of a foreign country, has, in the end, led both that country and the United States to grief.” Consequently, Americans should recognize the sources of anti-American resentment, and be less hypocritical in denouncing other nations who follow our example. If it’s wrong for others, then by what principle of international law is it justified when we do it? ###
