Excellent advice on downsizing by Betty Sproule. Her guidelines on "currently functional, valuable, or wildly sentimental" will be very helpful to folks reluctant to let go of stuff. You never miss it, you always overestimate its worth, and if you upgrade, get rid of the item you replaced ASAP! Or you'll just fill up your house all over again. On that, Betty is surely correct.

I am 72 years old. I’ve had a full life and want to continue to live my life to the fullest. Doing this means being able to face the many challenges of our senior years. This book is filled with wisdom on how to deal with the mind-body-spirit, and deal with things both internally and externally.Empowered Aging: Expert Advice on Staying Healthy, Vital and ActiveOne of my favorite chapters is Downsizing for the Next Phase of Life. It is full of practical ideas, some of which I can do immediately, and some of which I can ponder to decide what I can do.One of the challenges that I am facing is maintaining my strength, and the chapter on Cross Training for Life was extremely helpful. I have worked with physical therapists and personal trainers who did not seem to help me. Cross training is something that I’ve heard about, but now I will investigate.In my search for physical well-being, I have found that Western medicine tends to be symptom-oriented and fails to get to the root of the problem. I have investigated several alternative approaches. The last section of this book deals with holistic approaches. From this section, I was able to identify someone in my area who does Integrative Manual Therapy. That is quite a find.

I purchased two of the books -- kept one for myself and gave the other to my neighbor. Our impromptu social nights have become so much more interesting and lively as we discuss what we gleaned from each of the contributing author's lifestyle and recommendations.

A compilation of excellent information that will benefit everyone as they age

Empowered Aging covers just about every aspect of aging you could want to learn about: food as medicine, brain health, maintaining mobility, and more, along with encouragement and motivation. After reading it, I feel like I can reorient some old habits into new ways that will support my well-being as I age. I especially liked the chapter on Cross-Training for Life by Dr. Dominique Scott, which covers maintaining mobility. He presents ideas for working with the body's natural systems to stay in good form, stay strong and avoid injuries. I highly recommend this book!

So, I was looking for a book on successful aging and found Zartman’s Empowered Aging. It was a very quick read with practical advice that I can put to use immediately. I loved the chapter on changing one’s way of thinking about retirement referring to it instead as a renewal of life’s focus after ones career. Anyone who has entered the post-career phase of life or is contemplating that change will enjoy the many good ideas and attitude changers across a variety of important topics.
