Excellent resource for beginners. Great, clear, concise demonstrations so you really can understand and get the technique down. I love the smaller size of the book because it doesn't take up space, and the spiral bound is fantastic-I wish my other instruction books were spiral bound so they lay flat! I did not find the size of the pictures a problem, unlike other reviewers, but I wasn't expecting to trace anything -as I freehand the example on to my paper. I'm picky about these books, having wasted $ before on some that were either not as clear or the teaching technique didn't match my style. This one is a must have in your library.
Although this is a beautifully crafted and documented guide, I was disappointed in two major elements. One - the author assumes the reader has a full collection of colored pencils spanning at minimum, three brands, as his demonstrations (kindly) list exactly what brand and color pencils he uses in each. In every demonstration he lists at minimum the isolated use of three separate brands to complete the art displayed. So although comprehensive in that way, there is no cross referencing chart across colors of differing brands. Therefore those of us that have committed significant funds to a single brand are left to guess what from our stash we should use. Seems to be a synaptic oops. Second - the most widely suggested technique the author uses in his demonstrations is burnishing. Although he tells the reader what color to use to burnish over which specific area of the art, nowhere does he give an instructional - or even definition - as to what burnishing is. So where some areas of this publication assumes the reader is a rank beginner, there are other areas directed to a well developed artist with a significant background and stock of supplies.
Just received this book, & haven't read the entire book, but from what I have read (I'm on page 83), I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in working with "Colored Pencils".Chapter 1 goes into a lot of detail about the Basics: Pencils - Brands & Types; Erasers - never realized the type makes a lot of difference depending on the pencil & paper type; Sharpeners - again the type does make a difference; Color charts for the different major brands of pencils, etc.Chapter 2 - Discusses Reference photos - Types. Photo techniques & editing, Printing, & the author has even included several photos for you to practice with.Chapter 3 (page 83 ) - This is as far as I have read in this book. I stopped here because it goes into "Colored Pencil Techniques" & I didn't have time to read the whole chapter. I want to be able to take my time, & go through this chapter slowly.This book is a wealth of information. I love that it has a Hardcover & is Spiral bound. It makes it so much easier when the book lies flat when you are trying to follow instructions, & the hard cover provides protection & stability.This is probably one of the most comprehensive 'Guide to' book I have ever read. Some authors say their book contains all the info you will need for their particular art form, activity, etc, but most write as if you already have some knowledge in that area, & leave out some of the basics.I can't say enough to express how happy I am that I bought this book, & I can't wait until I start trying out some of Author, Gary Greene's, techniques.
I have been taking colored pencil classes and working on colored pencil projects for about two months now, but I learned so much from Gary's book. It really IS the Ultimate Guide, covering all the areas I had questions on, or things I had painfully learned, like the difference between different brands of pencils, between wax and oil, how to use solvent. And that's just the beginning. Next he goes into demonstrations that I plan to follow along of how to do different types of effects with colored pencils. It's a really good resource. There is even a section on how to take a good reference photo, although being married to a photographer, I never really struggle with that luckily. I would recommend this to anyone starting out with colored pencils.
When the title says "ultimate" you can take that to the bank. What a fabulous and informative book. I usually end up skimming non-fiction "how to" books, but this one caught me and held me in. There's a lot of engaging info here, techniques that I'd never before figured out, and step by step instruction. Excellent if you seriously want to learn how to control those color pencils.
I had the book on pre-order so I was pleasantly surprised to get it early. Like another reviewer, I was also disappointed in the size and it does make the book less user-friendly. I do like the spiral binding but it really needed to be a bigger book like other colored pencil guides. It does have a few suggestions and demonstrations that are worth squinting to see. I like that it has a bit of info on oil-based colored pencils though most colored pencil guides are still lagging way behind in that area. It also has a workshop on dvd that you can get a preview of by going to the Artists Network workshop site. It would have been fantastic at a proper size for cp, though, truly!
I am a total novice to colored pencil art, and have been amazed at the beauty and versatility of this medium. Silly me! I had NO IDEA what can be accomplished with colored pencils!So, being a bit OCD, I have been creating a library of "how to" books. Some are overwhelming, albeit gorgeous. Others are simplistic and not very helpful.This book is like Goldilocks'...."just right"!! Besides helpful info on brands and types of colored pencils, there is info on paper types, erasers, color range charts (18 pages!!) divided by brands, plus 'how to's' and What mistakes to avoid. The skills of burnishing, color lifting, painting, under painting, layering, etc. are made simple to understand and practice.And the art projects and step-by-step demos are more complete than any others I have seen. The finished projects are so beautiful!!I am very excited with this book, and feel empowered. What more could anyone ask?
