Review

“Milk! A 10,000-Year Food Fracas is a feat of investigation, compilation and organization . . . Altogether a complex and rich survey, “Milk!” is a book well worth nursing.” ―Wall Street Journal“The sort of book that Proust might have written had Proust become distracted by the madeleine . . . you step away from this book with a new vantage on history, a working knowledge of exotic milk and cheese, acceptance of your mom, a sense of what makes Mark Kurlansky tick and a weird craving for buffalo mozzarella.” ―Editors' Choice, New York Times Book Review“[A] readable and almost unreasonably fascinating book.” ―The Times of London“Kurlansky's entertaining, fast-paced history of milk exhibits his usual knack for plumbing the depths of a single subject . . . Kurlansky's charming history brims with excellent stories and great details” ―Publishers Weekly“Cod, salt, paper, oysters, 1968, and Havana-Kurlansky always picks a singular subject, then runs with it as he provides historical and cultural context. Here he examines our relationship to milk since the domestication of animals more than 10,000 years ago. That relationship shifted with the Industrial Revolution, which meant out with the family cow and in with pasteurization and, eventually, food fights over industrial farming, animal rights, and GMOs. Pour a glass and get out the cookies before reading.” ―Library Journal's Nonfiction Picks, May 2018“The author of Salt (2002) and Cod (1997) tackles another staple food in this chatty history of milk andsome of the many products made from it . . . Kurlansky's wide-ranging curiosity makes a familiar topic seem exotic.” ―Booklist“A wide-ranging history of a surprisingly controversial form of nourishment . . . Chock-full of fascinating details.” ―Kirkus“A fascinating and comprehensive book that will keep readers engaged and entertained . . . Will appeal to both foodies and readers of world history.” ―Library Journal“Fascinating . . . Every chapter of Milk! entrances with I-did-not-know-that facts and observations.” ―BookPage“As with Mark Kurlansky's Cod and Salt, I wish I had written Milk! Never would I have thought that so elementary a liquid food had such an intriguing history, one that includes science, politics, economics, and gourmandize. A great read on a great subject!” ―Mimi Sheraton“Mark Kurlansky, the best-selling author of Cod and Salt, traces the 10,000-year-old cultural, economic, and culinary trajectory of this dietary staple, packing in dairy-centric recipes both ancient and modern.” ―Modern Farmer, "Seven of the Season's Best New Books"“Calcium-heavy gold . . . the fine cream of the book rises to the top.” ―USA Today“A prolific and spirited explicator of the the world, Kurlansky has written on subjects as varied as 1968, Cuba, and European Jewry, but his sweet spot is literature on single forms of nutrition and sustenance, with books such as Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World and Salt: A World History. He now turns his attention to the mother of all subjects--milk--which he sees as the most argued-over food of the past 10,000 years. In this entertaining and constantly surprising book, he chronicles debates and disputes over milk (breast or bottle, pasteurized or homogenized, genetically modified or raw) and even finds that fierce disagreements over wet nurses involved not whether to use one, but whether brunettes or blondes were better.” ―The National Book Review, "Five Hot Books"“Food historian Mark Kurlansky is famous for his deep dives on singular subjects, which range from salt to cod to oysters, and his latest work is everything one expects from this obsessive researcher. Milk! delves into the world's most complex cultural, economic and culinary stories centered around milk, from Greek creation myths to modern pasteurization.” ―Smithsonian Magazine, 10 Best Books about Food of the Year“Something to enjoy with a cold class of (what else) milk and a warm cookie.” ―Popular Science“Rich and interesting, stocked full of recipes and facts. It's an immensely rewarding reading experience.” ―BookRiot, 50 Must-Read Microhistories“Compelling.” ―The Columbus Dispatch“Best-selling author Mark Kurlansky follows up Cod (1997) and Salt (2002) with another zestful exploration of one foodstuff - milk - through history and a range of lenses . . . Kurlansky keeps up a cracking pace on a tour that covers classical geographer Strabo griping about the Celts' milk consumption; the disease-generating dairies of nineteenth-century New York City; lactose intolerance in China; and 126 recipes for everything from ghee to syllabub.” ―Nature“From the first page of this book, you'll be fascinated by how much milk, and its relatives like cheese, whey, and ice cream, have infiltrated our lives over thousands of years. If you've ever found yourself in a debate about what milk is the best milk--goat, cow, human?!--this book will equip you with all the random tidbits to strengthen your rebuttal.” ―Bon Appétit, "8 Non-Cookbook Food Books to Read This Summer"“It may be a stretch to say that by understanding the history of milk that one can understand the history of the world, but maybe not that much of a stretch . . . As Kurlansky shows throughout Milk!, the story of dairy is really the story of civilization . . . What Milk! does particularly well is elucidate the history of conflict around all things milk.” ―Inside Higher Ed“Fascinating stuff . . . [Kurlansky] has a keen eye for odd facts and natural detail.” ―The Wall Street Journal on THE BIG OYSTER“Magnificent . . . a towering accomplishment.” ―Associated Press on THE BIG OYSTER“Every once in a while a writer of particular skill takes a fresh, seemingly improbable idea and turns out a book of pure delight. Such is the case of Mark Kurlansky and the codfish.” ―David McCullough on COD“Kurlansky finds the world in a grain of salt.” ―The New York Times Book Review on SALT“Kurlansky approaches Havana like an Impressionist painter, building the image of this metropolis of 2 million inhabitants with subtle brushstrokes.” ―Washington Post on HAVANA“An early favorite . . . Everybody can learn, and everybody will eat.” ―Washington Post on INTERNATIONAL NIGHT

Kurlansky's book may be better described as a how milk was USED in history, rather than as a history of milk. The book is well written, but it is confounding to have so many errors in the book, and so many conclusions that are simply wrong. For example, Kurlansky speculates on why we always see images in art of women breast feeding from the left. Well, the reason, if you ask a breast feeding mother, is that if you're right handed, you need the right hand to take care of everything else. He states as well, that cows produce 50-70 pounds of methane PER DAY. Think about that: 50-70 pounds PER DAY. Multiply that. That's a lot of gas (a pound of methane is just under a cubic gallon of volume) per year, and the number is wrong: the numbe is 70-120kg per YEAR. He has a substantial chapter on dairy product use in Asia. I checked with an expert in the field. Her assessment "good writing, bad facts." "Plumb pudding" is not named because "raisins were once called plums." "Plumb" is short for the Latin word for lead, because there was a lead toy placed in "Plumb pudding, " and sometimes still is. Bottom line is: people who read this book are in fact going to know something about the subject, but not everything. They, like me, are going to look at the new information and think "I didn't know that," and there's a reason: it's wrong. The 3 stars are because of the quality of the writing, and the interesting recipes.

Mr. Kurlansky has a special skill with taking a small slice of the world—cod, salt, paper, the Basques—and showing how that small slice has had a huge impact on history, often in ways that is not immediately obvious. This time around he takes on milk and, as usual, does an excellent job. There is much to learn here. Mammals are not biologically designed to drink milk beyond babyhood. Sometime over the past millennia, however, some humans have essentially bred themselves to be able to digest milk as an adult. (And some have not; thus, the lactose-intolerant.) Throughout that time to the present day, arguments about milk have raged. Is milk actually good for you? If so, which milk is best? (Cow? Goat? Sheep? Camel? Horse?...)In point of fact, for most of history, milk has been comparatively unsafe to drink. It is easily contaminated and spoils quickly; thus, the development of cheeses and other dairy products. It is only in the past 100 years or so that pasteurization and other methods of purifying milk have made it safe enough to be generally sought after. Even then, people complained that safe milk was not as wholesome and tasty as raw milk. Milk, it seems, has always fights an uphill battle. But what made milk desirable in the first place? Mr. Kurlansky reminds us that, until wide-scale production of sugar cane and sugar beets, milk was the sweetest food available to humans, apart from honey. That is why, in the Bible, the land of Canaan is referred to as a “land of milk and honey”—sweetness upon sweetness. In a world saturated with sugary foods and drinks, it is easy to forget this. The main weakness in this book is the number of recipes scattered throughout the text. He notes that these are recipes worth trying at home; however, I would doubt that. I found most of them to be difficult to follow. Granted, I am not much of a cook but from what little I could gather, but they didn’t seem appetizing to me either. Many of them have some historical interest but not enough to justify how many he provides. Maybe a real cook would feel otherwise.Milk is so common in the United States today that it is difficult to remember that this is only a recent phenomenon. Mr. Kurlansky takes us back through the history and shows us the huge impact the development of this foodstuff has had on us. It is definitely worth a read, even if you skip the recipes.

I've been of fan of Mark Kurlansky since I first read "Salt," which led me to purchase all of his books as the years went by. "Milk" isn't my favorite book of his, but it was still a good read, perfect for a nerd like me. Fun to read, I learned a lot of fascinating facts and informative tidbits about dairy products and the hows and whys of how they have been used--and transformed--over the millennia. No matter what the subject (or how mundane and perhaps boring it sounds), you can't go wrong picking up a book about a topic Mark Kurlansky has researched and written about.

I am a big fan of Kurlansky's books on "micro-history". I have read Cod, Paper and Salt and loved how he weaved each of those topics into the bigger picture in history. Milk has missed the mark. Too many recipes interrupting the history and facts. It's as much a cookbook with some history as it is a history book with some recipes. I found myself bored and wishing he had left a few recipes out or put them in the end in an appendix. If you are fascinated with recipes, including arcane measurements, by all means read it.

I am a milk lover myself. I keep the kashrut dietary rules which makes the presence of milk (or not) centerpiece of my eating habits. I do drink milk as a half connoisseur half delicatessen specialist. Thus the motivation to read this book. Liked it (wouldn't say loved it). But as always, Kurlansky, gives a tremendous historic perspective, intelligently, about eating subjects. From cod to salt, milk this time. Good enough stuff.

I like the author, he writes some interesting history articles about the most common things in our daily lives that we never sit to think of. I like he crosses cultures and peoples to bring together how milk was used in different cultures. And not all milk is from the same animal. Some cultures used goats instead of cow, etc...

As a food historian, I am always on the lookout for a new book--and since I love Kurlansky's work, I jumped at this one. It is a fabulous telling of how important milk is in many cultures. Kurlansky puts in recipes, some are odd--but that is not the main focus. It reads like a novel--well paced and interesting.

A baby is born hungry. What to feed the little creature? Mother's milk! It's a very old answer but this book shows that cheese, refrigeration, and pasteurization have changed the game.

I preface this review by making it clear that I’m flattered to have been confused for a paid reviewer/paid writer before but I write these reviews as a passion and a way to expand my way of thinking as an author. The Successful Author Mindset; A Handbook For Surviving The Writer’s Journey by Joanna Penn (kindlebook version) caught my attention for multiple reasons. One of the reasons has to do with the admission that I write to help me therapeutically tap into the self-confident and carefree spirit that helped me to become valedictorian of my 8th grade graduating class (author Doreen Virtue inspired me from one of her books the Courage To Be Creative to allow myself to take up writing for creative writing therapy). Additionally, like millions of others who have writing dreams, I have reasons to continue my writing journey for life stemming from some reasons I prefer to keep secret. However, what I do feel comfortable sharing is that reading about the the author who penned the book for the Revenant movie and still works full-time made me realize that I harbor dreams of being a writer for life while still holding a full-time job (with awareness that I must hold little concern for whether my determination and intent to be a writer/author for life culminates in obscurity andor fame). Anyhow, one of the advice takeaways that was healing for me to glean from Joanna Penn’s book was the benefit of a writer making a creative date for themselves to where they would allow themselves to do activities andor go out places that would help creativity. I also like some of the online resources and books that Joanna Penn includes as mentorship and support for a writer whether they are just beginning their authorship journey or if they have been pursuing writing for quite a while. She also gives helpful advice on when to listen to a critic and when it is ok to leave the criticism alone. She also makes it clear in a healing way that criticism often comes to those who stand out in a positive way even when the persons being criticized for their writing may not realize it. Penn also makes it clear that a writer must try to recognize their own critical thoughts to their writing when it comes up and gives suggestions for how to compassionately tell your inner critic to relax while making a time to honor the critic later (plus more constructive advice). I also acknowledge that I’m blessed with an amazing husband who encourages and supports my goal to be a writer/author while also balancing a full-time job.

Writing, as a vocation, just like any other vocation, has its ups and downs. If you, like me, read the non-fiction books about writing and writers, you would have read about the good things – the joy of writing, the craft, the satisfaction and fulfillment. But not that many authors write about the bad – the crippling self-doubt, the fear of failure and comparisonitis, or the ugly – the haters, procrastination and overwhelm that come with this job.Joanna doesn’t just delve in to the bad and the ugly, she gives suggestions on what to do about it. She even manages to help you see the possibility of finding some good in the bad and the ugly. For example – in the section on rejection and criticism, she says: “Rejection by an agent or a publisher who is not a good fit for your book is a blessing in disguise because you may find a home for it elsewhere or happily self-publish later.”I can’t speak for everyone, but for me, many passages of this book felt like she was speaking directly to my soul – to that place inside every writer that is vulnerable and sensitive. That part of us that has days when all we want is to go live in the fictional universe we created and not deal with the bad and the ugly of the real world. This book reaches out to that part, gives it a hug and tells it to not be afraid.

I went into this book thinking that I wouldn't get much out of it. After all, I have been through my tormented "aspiring writer" phase and come out the other side a proud, independently published author. Sure, I'm still plagued by insecurity and doubt, but how much help could a glorified pep talk really be – even from someone I respect as much as Joanna Penn?Oh, how wrong I was.The Successful Author Mindset should be required reading material for all writers, no matter the stage in their journey. Unlike so many self-help books, it doesn't shove vague platitudes or useless statistics in your face. Instead, Penn offers excerpts from her actual journey (an incredibly gutsy move) and real-life antidotes from herself or other authors to contextualize the problems the book addresses. You will never once feel alone while reading this book. And hey, the inspiration quotations are pretty inspiring, too.Penn covers a wide range of doubts, concerns, and inhibitors that affect authors at every stage of writing and publishing. She explains each issue, then follows it with her "antidote" or best advice or steps to move past the problem and on with your creative life.Best of all is Penn's generosity. Within the text, she freely offers up creative ideas and her own writing, creativity, and productivity "secrets." I finished the book feeling encouraged, energized, and confident, as if I had just spent a couple hours chatting with a friend or mentor.Do yourself a favor and read this book. Start with the chapters that address your own issues, or read it straight through in one day like I did. You will get what you need out of it. You just have to read.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has won five National Jewish Book Awards."To Heal a Fractured World" is not one of those five. But, for my money, it's the best and most important book he has written. This book is a powerful antidote to a disturbing trend in which Orthodox Judaism has become more and more concerned about the details of halachic observance and less about Jewish values and ethics. It's a classic case of losing sight of the forest through the trees.Along comes Rabbi Sacks to remind us that Judaism's principal objective is to create an ideal, peaceful, compassionate society and that we each have our role to play as God's partners.Sacks does not dismiss the importance of halachah or rituals. But he clearly recognizes that, at this point in history, Judaism needs a stronger emphasis on, as he puts it, "the ethics of responsibility."As he notes, the Hebrew word for "responsibility" is achrayut, which comes from "acher," which means "other."This book is a clarion call to focus our attention and efforts on the needs of others. And, by others, the Torah means both people and animals.

Fabulous! A tremendous insight into the essence of the Jewish faith and how it has come to be what it has through the centuries. Early on he shares that the book was originally written as a wedding gift for his son and daughter-in-law. What an amazing man that would show his love in this manner - and then share it with the world. What a gift for sharing the faith! It is engaging at an incredible level. At times, it was like reading a really good novel, I couldn't wait to read what came next.I will share that I am a Christian by faith and this book gave me an even deeper appreciation for what we call the Old Testament otherwise known as the Hebrew Bible. I finished the book with an overwhelming sense of gratitude - for both our ancient fathers in the faith and for Rabbi Sacks. I imagine Jewish readers will feel the same.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks is a leading Jewish theologian. Now retired, he is still writing copiously, and all that he writes is very well worth studying. Christians and Jews alike will benefit from the breadth and depth of his knowledge, his humanity, and his excellent writing skills.

This is an important subject that should resonate with everyone. It is written with clear and viable message. This book is fascinating, interesting, and inspiring. You may read for fun or for educational purposes. Either way, you’ll enjoy it

Very thoughtfully and well-written book by a highly respected UK Rabbi. He is mainly writing to assist Jewish people who seek clarification of their views on what Biblical (Old Testament) books should mean to those alive today. His main emphasis is that the stories of the Bible teach all humans, not just Jews, what our creator expects of us in living our daily lives to be partners with God to bring about fairness, justice, caring, love, support to our families, our neighbors, all humans and the flora and fauna of our world. While our perception of reality and truth must come individually, we are all in this life together and need to spend our lives learning how best to do it. We must do the work since we are empowered to do so by our very nature. We cannot sit back and leave everything to God (or, for Christians, to Jesus) to handle our problems. We take our inspiration from our creator, but our actions are up to us.Dr. Donald Clark

I'm a world, full of hatred and divisions, it is uplifting to see a message of understanding, love, tolerance and respect for human beings- irrespective of their faith. One of the most important messages is: " With freedom, comes responsibility". All of us, as individuals and communities, are responsible for ourselves, and also for our neighbors and community. The world is broken and only love, not hatred and violence can heal it.I would also recommend to go on YOU TUBE and listen to Sir Jonathan Sacks' interviews. Deep thinking not only on religion, but the outlook on the world, our role and purpose in it. The style is easy to read and understand-not heavy philosophy. One wish- and should- go back and re-read.

Should be required reading for law students who study ethics and the moral quandaries that their representation of people will present.

I read this book because it was among 5 books recomended by Rabbi Wolpe as the recent best books on religion.I was not disappointed. In fact although this was a kibrary book for me, I found that I was wanting tocopy so many paragraphs or pages that it didn't made sense to do this. So I ended up ordering my own copy.I felt there was much relevant material in terms of not only religious information but political thought as well.

The deeper I wade into this universe, the more complex and creative it gets. I had to give 4 stars simply because of the many typos and grammatical errors. It's enough to be very distracting. BUT, the story totally has me hooked. That's saying something, because I am a professional writer and editor, so I'm quick to drop a series when there are too many errors. The author here has imagined a universe in which life and conflict exist in many varied forms. As humans encountered intelligent machines bent on their destruction, I was along for the ride. When they began meeting intelligent biological aliens ranging from insectile to bacteria, I knew that Mr. Larson is a creative genius. If you love space operas, you'll definitely want to dive into the Star Force series.

It's hard to give a review of this book without giving spoilers. I've run into several other fans online and they await each new release like a kid waiting for Christmas so this review will be short and general.Battle Station opens up the Star Force series to a million and one possibilities of where the story can go. I dare say its the most important book in the series to date. Of course all the action and characters we know and love are here but as we finally get the answers to some mysteries, some new troubles and new opportunities open up for our heroes. That's about as general as I can make it before I get into spoiler territory. If you love the series, as I do, you're going to buy it no matter what I say. However if you're new to the series, reading the rest are an absolute must because Larson writes each installment as if you've been following all along and already know whats going on.Buy it. Love it. And count down the days until book six, Empire, is released. This is a great series and I can't thank Mr. Larson enough for giving us such awesome reads.

This series is excellent the whole way through. Whenever you think a rhythm has been established, it evolves into a new situation with clever implications. The writing is fast paced but not simplistic. The plots are sometimes cliche, but they shift around so fast that they aren't predictable or boring. It's not deep philosophy or dense reading, but it is extremely creative and have a consistent treatment of the futuristic technologies.Caveats(1) Books 1-9 are excellent and end at a logical stopping point. Books 10-12 are pale imitations that can be skipped without missing anything. I didn't hate the last 3, but they are disappointing after the brilliance of the first 9. The first 9 are better left unblemished with an anticlimactic sequel trilogy.(2) There is some mild implicit sexism. It doesn't get in the way of the good parts of the books, but it is there. Every female character is described in terms of her attractiveness when first introduced. All women are either objects of desire, incompetent under pressure, or schemers. The men, by contrast, are portrayed with much more variety in personality and role. Women are never insulted explicitly, but the characterization is still pretty consistent and unfortunate.

I have read all of the Star Force novels up to date (Swarm, Extinction, Rebellion, and Conquest). This is the fifth book in the series. I have to say it is apparent that this one was not given the same effort as prior novels.Larson is frequently criticized for moving too fast. He doesn't take a lot of time to setup a satisfying background story or develop characters. Another minor criticism is that his story and character progression are too unbelievable to be taken seriously. I will talk in a little bit more detail about these critiques later, but suffice it to say that all of these problems were on major exhibition in this installment. I'm going to give one early example of a repeating theme throughout the book and will try to leave out details on the rest so I don't spoil it.Kyle Riggs is off in a foreign solar system where he is engaged in a struggle to aid an alien race of biotics (called the Centaurs) rebuild their civilization after being exiled from their planets and sequestered off-world in a giant space station by the Macros (essentially a race of genocidal, biotic-hating robots). Without much in the way of planning or even any recorded person-to-person interaction between Riggs and one of the Centaurs (excluding short radio transmissions), you see the Star Force battalion already making moves by chapter 12 to capture a major Macro production facility. In the very short time period leading up to that point, Riggs has already flown through the "ring" (basically a mysterious wormhole conduit that allows fast-travel between far-away star systems) situated at the end of Eden into an unknown system. This is after telling the reader countless times that doing such a thing would be idiotic and potentially draw Macro aggression. As a side note, one of the most annoying things about the story at this point is how nervous Riggs is about the Macros being "triggered" to attack their colony by someone going through the ring while there is a large Macro presence on almost every single world in the Eden system. At any rate, Riggs space walks through the ring and discovers a brand new alien race of "crustaceans" he refers to as the Lobsters as captains of the long-lost Nano ships. The first 12 chapters are annoyingly incomplete, and Riggs very briefly summarizes segments of the story that deserve much more care and full narration. The part with the "Lobsters" (supposedly a brand new alien race of water-dwelling crustaceans) was exceptionally ridiculous and made me almost stop reading right there. Riggs discovers a member of the new alien race aboard one of the pre-programmed Nano ships, beats him unconscious (as part of the "tests" the ship requires to allow control over them) and tries to demand that the ship not kill the concussed lobster. The ship then proceeds to do the thing where it heats the floor up to a very high temperature, burning the alien to death. Riggs comments that the smell is "mouth-watering" (I'm not kidding). This, along with the ever-changing personality of the robot "Marvin" (who accompanies him on the trip) made me wonder for a second if Larson was purposefully trying to derail the series. What starts as a semi-serious military sci-fi/"light" space opera begins morphing into something along the lines of a C-rated comic. The conversation between the lobster race and Riggs afterward is also quite ludicrous but I won't go into details. Suffice it to say that I got the distinct impression that nowhere near as much thought was given to this part of the story compared to first contact events recorded in book #1 and especially in books #2 and #3 with the Worms and the Centaurs. I came away from those episodes feeling somewhat intrigued and perhaps even slightly attached to the universe that Larson was building. When compared to this whole episode, my thoughts that Larson may have rushed this novel started to solidify. But aside from my problems with story progression, the incongruousness of the individual characters was quite annoying. First of all, I never fully bought Riggs as a military tough guy and strategic mastermind, given the fact that he is a college professor with no training, education, or (extensive) warfare experience. I was willing to ignore this little issue because the other elements of the story were entertaining, even if they weren't very believable. But in this book, Riggs seems a lot less stable and his personality seems to change from time to time without explanation. There is a scene in which Riggs asks one of his men to fly in front of a Macro missile to block it from knocking out millions of Centaurs. Riggs proceeds to watch the event unfold and then starts cracking jokes with Miklos, the previously stoic, overly-cautious second-guesser of Riggs. In this scene, Miklos doesn't seem to have any real objection to the death of human Star Force marine in order to save the Centaurs. It seemed that both of them were out of character for the entirety of this segment. But then again, when you are pumping out one novel after the other in a period of a few brief months, it is unlikely you have time to do any detailed analysis of hero congruity. One character that doesn't seem to have undergone an Axis II-level shift of personality is Sandra. Just when you thought you were going to be able to take a breather from her (as she didn't initially leave earth with Riggs), she still finds her way into the action about mid-way through the story. In predictable fashion, she immediately starts interfering with operational control and pulling Riggs into awkwardly placed sex scenes at the most unbelievable moments. If you couldn't buy a computer science professor as military mastermind and chief defender of humanity, I don't see how you could buy an uneducated bimbo as a superhuman assassin and bodyguard (not to mention a seemingly welcome and frequent distraction to every single strategy session that Riggs has with his staff during a crisis). In my review of book #4 in the series, I stated that she nearly made it unreadable. In book #5, she is equally (if not more) annoying.I remember reading BV Larson say that half of the stuff he has sold in the last couple years was written during that same time period. Apparently a good portion of Star Force was written before he was even a big seller on Amazon. I could tell from books #1-#3 that a good (but not great) deal of care and effort was put into plot and character development. It was not on the scale of what you would expect from the blockbuster writers of the genre, but the style still had some appeal nonetheless. Larson was far more concerned with avoiding sheer boredom with drawn-out background stories, technical minutiae, and overly-done descriptives. I have even come to appreciate that about Larson on some level, and his success as a self-published writer shows he has no shortage of appeal for his technique. One the other hand, one has to wonder if his effort to release a new book in a variety of genres every other month is part of the reason this book seems so rushed. I'm not sure I will read the next in the series, but if I do I'm not expecting much of an improvement. The thing that is most aggravating is that Larson has the talent to be a good writer of space opera. He just needs the time to put in the level of care required to make the story believable to those of us who read science fiction regularly. This production is nowhere near his level of potential, and he undersold the reader and himself by putting it out in its woefully unfinished state.

Purchased in a moment of desperation and longing for support from others who understand the journey of infertility, this book sat on my kindle for a while before I started reading it. I eventually came to feel God urging me, strongly calling out to me, nagging at my heart to just READ. THE. BOOK. So I did, and I am so, so glad. Each tale tells a different story, touching on the countless nuances and emotions of infertility. Not all stories end as we hope ours will -- in pregnancy -- but all do conclude with the narrator experiencing a deep message about God's love and purpose for their life, that "aha" moment, if you will. I also took away bits of advice from reading this book that I already have put into practice. I don't know where my infertility journey will go from here, but I feel so grateful for the spiritual growth, affirmation and comfort I experienced as a result of reading these stories.

The book was more faith based than I expected. The first half was still helpful for me and I'm glad I read it. The second half was much more faith based and so for me...not as helpful. But I did appreciate that there were stories from the man's perspective as well. We tend to forget it might be hard for them too. Overall, I'd recommend it.

For someone suffering with infertility, I was looking for anything and everything to help me cope with the fact that I will likely never have a child of my own. This book was the perfect read. It was full of stories and life lessons on how others have coped with their own infertility. The words in this book have helped me to learn to deal with the things that I am going through. It is good to hear advice from people who are or have gone through similar things. The words in this book have helped me in ways that one could not imagine.

We waited for 9 years for children. Praying. Waiting. Hurting. Waiting. Much of our identity was lost in the barrenness. This book was a life-changer. We got it year six, and wished we had year one. It answered and a lot of questions. The Lord used it to help us understand that we are a family with or without children. We didn't have to wait on life because we were waiting on children. We bought this for a couple who wears the shoes we wore for 9 years. We know the Lord will use it greatly in their life to meet some needs only the barren can understand.

Someone I had just met recommended this book to me. I downloaded a sample and was hooked! Finally, here was something supportive for people suffering through infertility. I was in a dark place after 4 years of not being able to get pregnant, and this book made me feel connected with people who shared the same feelings, hopes, and dreams as me. This book has also strengthened my relationship with God, and for that I will be forever grateful! I bought a copy of this book for my friend, who is also struggling through infertility and recommended it to my OBGYN! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this book!

This is an excellent book for those struggling with infertility or miscarriages. It is also a good one to read for those who want to understand what others may be going through. It is well written, in a way that holds the interest of the reader, with short stories woven in here and there. I have found this to be my favorite as a gift for friends who are struggling with issues we struggled with at one time.

This book showed me I wasn't alone. This was the only book I read about infertility that actually made me feel like there were other people out there like me. It doesn't try to give you quick fixes for infertility (because there are none), it isn't a science or a medical book. It is a book that touches the human heart. I sobbed through most of the book because every single story in this book resonated with me. They are all true. About real men and women. And they all touched my heart.

This book is not for the faint hearted. These are real people with their hearts and lives exposed. They do show how they found peace and what that looked like for them but you will still need a box of tissues on standby if you aren't made of stone, and certainly if like me you have had any kind of brush with the reality of infertility, and mine was but a glancing brush compared to most of these stories you will ache with these wonderful couples as they take you on their journey. If you are having infertility issues it does help you to know that you aren't the only one in the world and that may be of some comfort to you but this book is not a book of easy answers to hard questions. Some of the hard questions will remain but there is a glimmer of hope and peace.

Review

“Lucky Jim illustrates a crucial human difference between the little guy and the small man. And Dixon, like his creator, was no clown but a man of feeling after all.” – Christopher Hitchens   “Mr. Kingsley Amis is so talented, his observation is so keen, that you cannot fail to be convinced that the young men he so brilliantly describes truly represent the class with which his novel is concerned….They have no manners, and are woefully unable to deal with any social predicament. Their idea of a celebration is to go to a public bar and drink six beers. They are mean, malicious and envious….They are scum.” – W. Somerset Maugham   “’After Evelyn Waugh, what?’ this reviewer asked six years ago….The answer, already, is Kingsley Amis, the author of Lucky Jim….Satirical and sometimes farcical, they are derived from shrewd observation of contemporary British life, and they occasionally imply social morals….Lucky Jim is extremely funny. Everyone was much amused, and since it is also a kind of male Cinderella or Ugly Duckling story, it left its readers goo-humored and glowing.”  —Edmund Wilson, The New Yorker, 1956“I was recommended [Kinglsey Amis’ Lucky Jim] when I was a teenager trying to figure out how to start reading 'serious' books. Great recommendation, because on the surface it’s nothing of the sort, but it is brilliant.” —Hugh Dancy, T: The New York Times Style Magazine   “Remarkable for its relentless skewering of artifice and pretension, Lucky Jim also contains some of the finest comic set pieces in the language.” —Olivia Laing, The Observer “Remarkably, Lucky Jim is as fresh and surprising today as it was in 1954. It is part of the landscape, and it defines academia in the eyes of much of the world as does no other book, yet if you are coming to it for the first time you will feel, as you glide happily through its pages, that you are traveling in a place where no one else has ever been. If you haven’t yet done so, you must.” —Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post

I’m pretty sure most readers today have never heard of Lucky Jim, that crazed, lunatic’s cry of literary rage against the sheer boredom of academic life in the early 1950s. I read the novel decades ago and recently picked it up again, having decided to take a break from nail-biting stories of horror and suspense. And I must say, Kingsley Amis’s excoriating masterpiece is just as hilarious the second time around. When you first meet Jim Dixon, what strikes you is not only his penchant for mockery but his incredible ability to pull the most inventive faces. In fact, I counted no less than ten throughout the book, my favorite being his shot-in-the-back face. Those coupled with his irritatable mumblings, drunken ramblings, and blatant ignorance about women make for an antihero par excellence. And the highlight of these antics? A leaden, uninspired speech he must deliver to hundreds of students and faculty entitled “Merrie England,” whatever that means. If you love scathing, satirical stories featuring romance, give Lucky Jim a try. And don’t worry that the book was published more than sixty years ago. Its razorlike humor is as fresh as ever. Try to decide which is your favorite Jim Dixon face. And imagine you had to deliver that ill-fated “Merrie England” speech. Hint: a few pulls of good Scottish whiskey and you will indeed be merry. Good luck.

This is not as good as I remembered it, but still worth reading. I found parts of it extremely funny--notably the "Merrie England" lecture--and laughed out loud! On the other hand there are long, boring passages of psychological and philosophical pretentiousness, which are just what the book purports to denounce.

Really great read. Several laugh out loud moments. I can almost see our “protagonist” writing his letter to Johns, had me howling. It didn’t end as I saw coming, at least not completely. Really saddened that I waiting so long to read this film and why it isn’t reverted as much as Catcher.

I waited far too long before reading this classic work. Been a long time since I burst out laughing in public with a Kindle in my hands. But 'Lucky Jim' has that quality - and many more. The story is a simple boy/girl tale but some of the characters and their English eccentricities are a joy to discover. Simply magical.

As an American reader, I can definitely say this book started off very slowly for me, but boy did it gain speed after the dinner party. Amis’s brand of wry humor and dry sarcasm are a riot, and all the situations Jim ends up in are hilariously funny, yet also thought-provoking. I’d recommend this read if you’re accustomed to the nuances of British writing—a few of my friends (also Americans) couldn’t quite enjoy it due to the “how” it was written.

I've read a few examples of academic farce now, from David Lodge and Michael Frayn, and this must be the earliest I've encountered, barring Vile Bodies. In fact Amis does make his eponymous narrator deliver a nod to Evelyn Waugh. The book is occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, and especially when Dixon skewers his own academic output. There's a lot to like here but not too much to really sink one's teeth into. I imagine the most rewarding way to think about the book, beyond its comic merits, is along the lines of modernity rejecting staid academe. Unfortunately, there's no character representing the positive aspects of the intellectual life--no polyglot classicist with a broad, deep intellect and a quick wit. Perhaps the point is to lampoon the lesser institutions rather than the real pursuit of knowledge.Either way, it's a funny book and reads quickly, even if it's wrapped up a bit too neatly.

"Lucky Jim" is Jim Dixon - who appears to be a most unlucky man. He recently landed a university teaching job, but he's miserable. Terrible at his job, Dixon is left wondering throughout the book whether his position will be continued. In addition to his job woes, he seems to have great contempt for most everyone around him, including his neurotic girlfriend, Margaret. Things worsen when he's invited for a weekend of music at a senior professor's home and he meets the professor's son - Bertrand. A buffoonish artist, Bertrand nevertheless has an alluring girlfriend, the lovely Christine. Dixon unsurprisingly is drawn to Christine, despite her stuffy manner and seeming arrogance. Embarrassing Bertrand and stealing away Christine become him main priority. In the meantime, he still needs to prepare a lecture on "Merrie England" that will be attended by his superiors and local town dignitaries. Will he survive? The novel is a model of dry British wit - at times laugh-out-loud hilarious. Dixon is a fantastic literary character - a cynic who personifies the scorn we all feel at times. As Amis writes about Dixon, "all his faces were designed to express rage or loathing." In addition to his cynicism, Dixon is incredibly irresponsible and engages in all sorts of mischievousness, resulting in hilarious predicaments. Nevertheless, you cannot help but root for him to succeed. The writing is spectacular - each scene bristles with detail and nuance. In particular, Amis beautifully portrays difficult interpersonal situations frankly and accurately, replete with requisite humor. Although the book drags at times, it's a first-rate read. Most highly recommended, particularly for readers who enjoy novels set in academia.

I was so excited to receive this book. It helped me to identify so many tumbled rocks that were given to me for my crafts. I’m looking forward to making meaningful jewelry.

Colors are a bit off, probably from the printer. Needs white between the photographs or something to set the colors off.

The book I needed. These pictures allow me to learn the stone name and then I can look it up by name in one of the books that gives information about each stone. Particularly liked getting both the hard copy and the Kindle copy.

Best guide for rocks, love it

Great idea, wish the photographer new anything about white balance. The pictures have such a heavy yellow hue to them that you can't even tell what the true colors of the rocks are, which makes the book kind of useless!
