Perhaps I went into this book with faulty expectations... I was expecting something that may delve deep into neurobiology and related phenomenon or something that would really illuminate a possible way to leverage the elusive flow state. However, most of the book was filled with banal exposition of the lives of action/adventure athletes. I found it a little interesting, but for the most part, I just couldn't find myself caring. One anecdote could have provided enough of a context to work with, but more than half of the book is filled with vapid tales that appear intended to motivate or some kind of tributary. The book seems filled with lots of talk of flow state with the very occasional timid suggestion of reproducing the state. Weak read.

This is NOT a book about the comic book hero. It’s a book about a mental state called “the flow” and how adventure and extreme athletes have used it to make tremendous strides in their sports. The characteristics of the flow include extreme focus, time dilation / time distortion, a vanishing sense of self, extremely high performance, fearlessness, and a falling away of everything non-essential to the task at hand.Kotler is by no means the first author to write about the flow. The term was inaugurated by a book entitled “Flow” first published in 1990 by a University of Chicago Psychology professor named Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Csikszentmihalyi coined the term in the process of conducting a study on happiness. He found that happy people tended to engage in activities in which they could immerse themselves and find the zone. Contrary to the early part of Kotler’s book--in which it sounds like adventure athletes cornered the market on flow--Csikszentmihalyi says that said activity could be work or hobby and that the flow is to be found in poetry writing, yoga, martial arts, copy writing, or potentially any activity in which the skill level and challenge are both high.(To be fair, Kotler does get around to recognizing that extreme athletes neither invented nor exclusively exploit the flow. However, his—well-taken—point is that such athletes are unusually good a finding, and dropping deep into, the flow in part because risk-taking behavior is an important trigger. And for free climbers [rock climbers without ropes], mega-ramp skateboarders, and bodysuit skydivers sometimes there are only two possible states of existence—the flow and being scraped off a rock.) It should be noted that some of the elements of flow sound a lot like the states that have been described by various mystical religious traditions for centuries, e.g. the dissolution of a feeling of separation between self and the rest of the universe. Warning: religious readers may find it disconcerting to read that there are scientific explanations for states that were once attributed to communion with god or the like. While I’ve given Kotler’s book high rating, I haven’t yet given one reason to read it—and I do recommend people read it. First, while Csikszentmihalyi is the “father” of flow research, his methods were decidedly low tech--i.e. surveys and interviews—but Kotler reports on more recent studies involving neuroanatomy, neuroelectricity, and neurochemistry. Second, while Kotler delves into the science of the flow, he does so in a manner that is approachable to non-scientists. Finally, all of the narrative accounts of extreme athletes interspersed with the more technical commentary make for a very readable book, even if one is not particularly knowledgeable of—or interested in—such sports. I gave this book a high rating both for its food-for-thought value, and because of its high readability.I will admit that I was not so enamored of the book when I first began it, and other readers may find the same irritation. For one thing, Kotler’s adoration of extreme athletes comes off sounding like diminishment of mainstream athletes and others involved in “flowy” activities. A prime example of this is seen in Chapter 1. Kotler gives us an endearing description of how gymnast Kerri Strug won the gold in the 1996 Olympics by sticking a landing on a shattered ankle. However, he then comes off a bit douchey when he suggests that Strug’s achievement pales in comparison to Danny Way’s skateboard jumps at the Great Wall of China. For another thing, in his zealousness to prove that extreme sports practitioners are full-awesome while mainstream athletes are “meh,” Kotler makes some comparisons that seem apples and oranges to a neophyte such as me. If they are fair comparisons, he certainly doesn’t explain why they should be considered so. The best example of this is when he states that Olympic divers took decades to achieve increases in rotation that extreme skiers and skateboarders surpassed in much less time. This seems unreasonable for two reasons. First, divers have a very standard distance in which to achieve their acrobatics. In other words, they don’t get to build a “mega-platform” that’s 50% taller like Danny Way creates “mega-ramps” that were bigger than ever before. Of course, if you can increase the distance between yourself and the ground you can increase your spins, rotations, or whatever much more quickly (yes, your danger goes up vastly, I’m not diminishing that.) Second, the divers gained zero advantage from technological improvements, but the same cannot be said for skiers and skateboarders. In other words, if you go from skis made of oak to ones made of carbon nanotubes (that are 50 times stronger and 1/100th of the weight) of course you’re going to make gains faster.Perhaps, I’m overstating Kotler’s disdain for mainstream athletics, but that’s what happens when one uses a national hero as a set up to show how much more awesome a relatively unknown skateboarder is (among skateboarders Way is extremely well-known but he’s not a household name as the Olympian was--at least for a short time in the late 90’s.) I suspect that Kotler was just trying to convince a general audience that the athletes he’s speaking about aren’t pot-smoking knuckleheads who are as likely to be seen on America’s Funniest Home Videos crushing their nads on a handrail as setting a new world record. These men and women are serious people engaged in serious activities, and they give it their all. They do deserve more respect for that than they are probably given by broad sectors of the populace. Perhaps, the importance of what these folks are achieving does need to be conveyed because the demographic that reads books and the one that follows extreme sports probably has wide wings of non-overlapping area. (I’m not saying skateboarders are illiterate or bookworms don’t skate--just that the Venn diagram has substantial areas of mutual exclusivity.)As I indicated above, in each chapter we get both some insight into the nature of the flow and its triggers and stories of adventure / extreme athletes that serve as examples of what’s being discussed. In chapter 2 we learn what the flow looks like in terms of brain waves (i.e. high theta/low alpha, or between meditation and a relaxed / resting state of wakefulness.) In chapter 3, we learn about the neuroanatomy of the flow in terms of what areas of the brain it lights up, and that it’s at least as important what areas shut down. In chapter 4, we learn about the neurochemistry of the flow and that a cocktail of dopamine, norepinephrine, endorphins, anandamide, and serotonin makes up the chemistry of flow, but, critically, not so much with the adrenaline. The subsequent chapters deal with triggers of the flow, and what conditions best set up achievement of this state of mind.Chapter 9 stands out as an important, but quite different, portion of the book. It deals with the downside (or dark side) of the flow. This has a lot to do with the fact that the aforementioned internal substances (and the flow state in general) are quite addictive. While it’s unfair to say, and unlikely, that the extreme athletes Kotler writes about (i.e. the ones at the top of their games) are drug addicts as some might assume of skate boarders, snow boarders, and the like, it may not be unreasonable to say that they have a kind of monkey on their backs—albeit a perfectly legal one.As I’ve said, I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in this state of mind. One needn’t be interested in extreme sports to get a lot out of the book.

This book is crammed end to end with people jumping off buildings, skiing down cliffs, skateboarding, skydiving, surfing giant waves, etc. The core message is powerful but gets drowned in the author's over-the-top sports examples slathered far too liberally. It's almost like he doesn't have enough to say so he has to couch it in endless sports drama. It gets tiresome. So I'm going to do the same in this review. While repeating over and over how tedious his sports analogies are, I have to say that if you are patient, there are some real gems in this book worth picking up, and my recent meditations, study, sports and other activities have strongly benefitted from the reading. I'm not sure this will be the case for most, but it is a useful book if you are curious about how to engender flow in your life and you understand that flow happens in other places than just sports. The author does not do much to help you understand that. Just trust me on it.

Basically the book is a series of stories about extreme sport athletes with little to offer in the way of relating any practical application outside of dopamine fueled athletics. I was waiting until the final page for some kind of tie-in with the world outside of extreme sports and some practical training steps in the personal or corporate world, but these are never explored in any concrete way by the author. He just keeps boomeranging from one X Games feat to another, finally ending with a 800 mph skydive from outer space. Flow is an interesting state that all of us have experienced at one time or another. It is too bad that the author does little to explore the real world applications and steps the non-X Gamer can apply in real life.

No practical recommendations in this book other than Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's decades-old description of precursors or sidelines to the flow state.Somehow the Shaolin monks are never mentioned. A non-extreme-sport lifestyle dedicated to surpassing "normal" and engendering on-demand flow capability. The book did not transport me into a flow state.

I adored this book even more than The Rose Sisters. These two books were very reminiscent of Rosamunde Pilcher's books, which I love, especially her short stories. My print copies are tattered from being read so much. I loved the beautiful English setting, the kind heroes, the nasty-learning-change-older characters, the sweet, not sexy, tone of the story. I'm looking forward to reading more of Victoria Connelly's books!

I was drawn to read more by this author after reading The Rose Girls. I was not disappointed. The gorgeous atmospheric writing and sense of romance was absorbing and warming in every respect. A great read. Highly recommend.

This is a heart-warming story of loss, broken and restored relationships, and finding love again.Wonderfully done, the descriptions of the gardens and the English countryside made me feel as if I were there.Lovely, endearing characters. The stories of each one unfold and blend together seamlessly.I listened to the audio version of this story and narrator, Susan Duerden, did a fantastic job.I would definitely read more by this author.

The Jacob's family lived in Orley Court, an old English Manor for generations. Now Vanessa, a widow, her two daughters and their grandmother lives there.During the summer the Old Manor was in need of repair. This is a great plot and I enjoyed the writing. Ms Victoria led us through the old Manor that needed repairs. Then she stepped outside to show us the beautiful gardens all around the house and the hugh yard. This is a simple romance, so relaxing as you read it's like watching a movie, just wonderful. One daughter came up with a plan to repair the old Manor and Vanessa suggested the work for the garden. This novel was a very good sweet novel with humor, romance, love and some disagreements. I enjoyed the wonderful gardens with the sweet romance. Ms Victoria did a good job. Just sit back and enjoy.

Readers will fall in love with this romantic tale. . I am a sucker for storyline which are cultivate in english gardens. The beauty of reading the "Secret Garden" always draws me to these type of novels. Ms. Connelly is a new author on my library shelves and I we'll be searching for other novels in which she has written. Worthy author.

Love in an English Garden is a book showing that love is always around us as long as we are open to it. Even when our hearts get broken we have to take that chance again. That is what the book describes, finding love in an awesome setting as an English garden. The Garden has been unkept for years and it is in bringing the garden back to life that the characters find themselves also brought back to life.

This was an easy reading escape. Great for an airplane ride, day at the beach or a chance to get away from the world's sordidness. It was light and uplifting. The characters were well developed and you cheered and felt with and for them. Could've been longer to continue their stories. Wrapped up a little too abruptly. Maybe a sequel is out there. Will have to check.

anytime in your life. I found love late in my life , I never regretted it. My kind of book.

Given as a gift to a just turned 11 year old. She completely loved the tear away aspect of the book.

I love the idea that a group of students can look through these poems, choose one they like and tear it out so they can carry it with them to share with others . A great early poetry activity.

Great book. They're made to tear out so you can share with friends and family. Carry one with you or tape it up on a wall :)

Terrific resource! Used during April poetry month and will continue to use it year round. Small, short poems make sense for 3rd graders just learning about poetry.

My granddaughter is crazy about this!

If you like poetry and want to share your love with the young people in your life, buy this book. I bought myself a copy and then gave a copy to one of my college students who is preparing to teach middle-schoolers. She loved it!

This is such a great project and idea for a class studying poetry. I thoroughly enjoyed the concept and the book.

This was great for April 24 - "Poem in my pocket" day. we handed them out to our students and they had a blast reading poems to each other all day!

About the Author

David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator with Bill Mollison of the permaculture concept following the publication of Permaculture One in 1978. Since then he has written several more books, developed three properties using permaculture principles, conducted workshops and courses in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Japan. Within the growing and international permaculture movement, David is respected for his commitment to presenting permaculture ideas through practical projects and teaching by personal example, that a sustainable lifestyle is a realistic, attractive and powerful alternative to dependent consumerism. As well as constant involvement in the practical side of permaculture, David is passionate about the philosophical and conceptual foundations for sustainability, which he explored in Future Scenarios: How Communities Can Adapt to Peak Oil and Climate Change (2009), and Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability (2003). With an increasingly high profile as a public speaker, David Holmgren provides leadership with his refreshing and unorthodox approach to the environmental issues of our time. David lives with his partner Su Dennett and their son Oliver at "Melliodora", a one-hectare permaculture demonstration site at Hepburn Springs, Central Victoria, Australia. I actually bought this for a class. The project required a book of our choosing. The following is my response to the project questions. Why did you choose this book? I initially chose this book because I have had an interest in “sustainability” for a few years now. Over the summer of 2014, my wife’s family and I took a roadtrip to southern Florida to visit my brother-in-law, who was, at the time, an intern at a sustainability education center for missionaries, called H.E.A.R.T. villiage. There I first learned of the permaculture concept, and became enamored by it. In preparation for this project, I found a list of “essential” books on the topic, and chose this one because of the reviews. Why is this an important topic? As any environmental scientist will tell you, it is the people who work directly with the land who are in a unique place to bring about tremendous environmental change. Their intimate knowledge of how plants and animals interact with one another is the key to ecosystem restoration and stability. “For any human culture to be considered sustainable it must have the capacity (proven only with historical hindsight) to reproduce itself down the generations while providing human material needs without cataclysmic and long-term breakdown. If it is energetically impossible for high energy society (such as ours) to be anything more than a pulse in the long run of human history, then it cannot, by definition, be sustainable, no matter how much we shuffle the technological deckchairs.” Today, it is almost common knowledge that we are in need of global structural and economic reforms. Climate change, resource depletion, peak oil, desertification, etc. Modern civilization is a global one, and so these challenges are faced by everyone. We need systems and models that anyone can utilize to help our species mitigate and adapt to these problems.Permaculture is one such system, and a very promising one at that. Permaculture: (Permanent Culture) - The use of systems thinking and design principles that provide the organizing framework for implementing consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature - a creative design response to a world of declining energy and resource availability - yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for provision of local needs, simultaneously restoring damaged & destroyed landscapes. Permaculture is a system with immediate gains (by way of production and restoration) and does not require environmentally taxing inputs. Nor does this practice require government intervention (something which I’m sure we all desire a bit less of.) Permaculture comes pre-packaged with straightforward principles and pathways that can aid our civilization in its much needed energy descent, can help restore damaged and destroyed landscapes, can provide bountifully to human material (and even psychological?) needs, and most importantly: can help us build a more sustainable and prosperous world. The Book: Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability by David Holmgren.C. 2002 - Sustainable Design - Environmental EthicsWhat was the author’s purpose in writing this book? “To explain permaculture to a wider audience that may not be attracted by the organic gardening label. It is especially aimed at activists, designers, teachers, researchers, students, and others grappling with the vexed issues of sustainability within a wide range of fields.”Did the author make a logical argument? Since this is mostly a work of philosophy, thankfully, Holmgren sets up the book’s argument in the introduction. “Like all ideas, permaculture is founded on some fundamental assumptions that are critical to both understanding and evaluating it:”---The environmental crisis is real and of a magnitude that will certainly transform modern global industrial society beyond recognition. In the process, the well-being and even survival of the world’s expanding population is directly threatened.---The ongoing and future impacts of global industrial society and human numbers on the world’s wondrous biodiversity are assumed to be far greater than the massive changes of the last few hundred years.---Humans, although unusual within the natural world, are subject to the same scientific (energy) laws that govern the material universe, including the evolution of life.---The tapping of fossil fuels during the industrial era was seen as the primary cause of the spectacular explosion in human numbers, technology, and every other novel feature of modern society.---Despite the inevitably unique nature of future realities, the inevitable depletion of fossil fuels within a few generations will see a return to the general patterns observable in nature and pre-industrial societies dependent on renewable energy and resources. Holmgren then goes on to explain how Permaculture differs from organic gardening or technological responses to these problems. Permaculture:Gives priority to using existing wealth to rebuilding natural capital, especially trees and forests, as a proven storage of wealth to sustain humanity into a future with less fossil fuel.---Emphasises bottom-up “redesign” processes, starting with the individual and household as the drivers for change at the market, community and cultural level.---More fundamentally, was predicated on the likelihood of some degree of collapses and breakdown in technology, economics and even society, which is not envisaged or designed for by the “green tech” optimists but is a current reality for many people around the world.---Sees pre-industrial sustainable societies as providing models that reflect the more general system design principles observable in nature, and relevant to post-industrial systems. Arguably, one of the most important things Holmgren argues about the permaculture concept, is that it is predicated on the natural flows of universal energy laws - either humanity will naturally begin to adapt in this way (and so formulaic principles and pathways can help us mitigate more effectively), or perhaps they will bridge the energy gap (fusion?)...however, new technology does not come prepackaged with a “wisdom chip,” so organizing societies in sustainable ways is the most responsible and sensible thing we can do. Given the tenacity with which Holmgren defends these principles and pathways, with the wealth of 25 years of personal observation and experimentation and a myriad of scientific wisdom, I say that yes, his arguments are quite solid.Do you feel the items were logically based and true? Yes. Example: refer to IPCC report AR5Did the author keep you interested? I have been trained to study Philosophy, so this is my jam. However, I might warn those I would recommend this book to about its intellectual density.Share your favorite part of the book:---The Permaculture Flower (“The key domains that require transformation to create a sustainable culture.”)---The Twelve Permaculture Principles (“Generalized principles can be derived from the study of both the natural world and pre-industrial societies.”)---How he repeatedly makes the point that “The process of providing for people’s needs within ecological limits and in more sustainable ways requires a cultural revolution.”---How he explains that “business as usual” tactics will not solve the crises we are facing. What did you like most about the book? How carefully and logically it was written. How well mapped out its principles are. What did you like least? This is not a typical gardening book, but more of a philosophical treatise on the underpinnings of the permaculture concept. Having a background in philosophy and a craving for deep ecological understanding, I really enjoyed it. However, it is hard to recommend to anyone without those requisites. It is not, in any sense, light reading. The issues Holmgren raises could be very disturbing to some. It attempts to make a perennial statement of ethics, so for anyone who has studied moral philosophy, it might seem a bit misanthropic for those not already convinced by its precepts. The biggest problem with the book is its unashamedly anarchistic view of civilization, and so its callous attitude toward government. This will be an immediate turnoff to some, and leaves gaping holes where large scale policy recommendations might have been beneficial. (Though this was his point. Radical change is individual change.)What will be your lasting impression of the subject? This book was definitely highly influential to me. It helped me mentally structure my interest in sustainability, and helped me develop specific methods of systems thinking that I had before only conceptualized. I will be using this book throughout my academic career.Did you learn something new from the book? One of the most important concepts I learned from this book was the relationship between natural laws and human action. Specifically, Holmgren’s recognition of the 4th energy law of maximum power efficiency as a sociogeobiophysical design principle, and the application of this law to humane terra formations. Demonstrations of these kinds of relationships introduced “systems thinking,” and ultimately has lead me to pursue the field of systems ecology.Would you recommend this book? How would you rate it? Yes. However, as I’ve said, I’d warn the reader of its philosophical density. On a scale of ten, I’d give it a rating of 8.5.

Holmgren turns a good idea into a religion. Sustainable agriculture is too important for a closed shop policy. The book shows the ideas but it is more of a cult than a practical guide to sustainable agriculture. I recommend other books to start with like the ones from Shepard or Savory or Toensmeier. If you want a new religion go for Holmgren. If you want advice for practical sustainable agriculture go somewhere else.

I wanted to love this book but I felt it was so hard to read. Very creative and deep thinking but unless you have a pretty good understanding of permaculture this book might just fly by your head. I had a hard time understanding some examples when it was describing David's native Australian countryside. Also it felt like it was a jumble of notes compiled together. Sort of reminded me of Bruce Lee's Tao of JKD. They try and categorize each section into the Permaculture principles but there is so much jumping around and reconnect I lose sight on what that section is focusing on.Lots of run on sentences that were really wordy. I had to read over many things two to three times to try to wrap my head around things. You really need to be focused to take in the information in this book. It does show how permaculture is a diverse web of interactions both on an ecological and principle level. But if you studied permaculture you'd know that already. If you're serious about permaculture get it and dive in. You'll find nuggets of information. But be warned you might get frustrated with his writing style.

A masterpiece of rigor and moral clarity. Holmgren has taken the next important step in the global Permaculture movement started by the brilliant and charismatic Bill Mollison, in that he has crystallized Mollison's insights into a mandala of twelve key principles. These principles go well beyond the detailed suggestions for regenerative gardening techniques that comprise most Permaculture literature--they are generalized so as to be universally applicable, yet clear and precise in their explanations. This theoretically dense book should be read slowly and deliberately in a group--a book club, for example, so that these principles can be thoroughly grasped and discussed. If Bill Mollison's Permaculture Design Manual is the practical permaculture "bible," this book is its theoretical complement.

I read this book and could see how this thinking about use and re-use, planning and observing will help not just my garden but my life. Really useful examples of each principle and in depth discussion of what they mean, how they can be applied in lots of cases.

Book arrived in good condition, good info.

condition of the book was excellent, however David Holmgren spends almost the entire time convincing the reader that he is knowledgable and doesn not provide any information on sustainable permaculture

This is a good book for those who are new to permaculture.I think there are better ones out there, but this covers the basics.

This book, Popular Woodworking's Arts & Crafts Furniture Projects (2008), is a nice expansion of the PW's previous title, Authentic A & C Furniture Projects (2000). If you're looking for an easy to follow Arts & Crafts furniture book, this one fits the bill pretty well. This title has 26 projects; These projects use modern tools/techniques, great for building A & C furniture to fill your bungalow. Of the 22 projects from the 2000 book, seven projects are included in the 2008 book, nine are on the bonus cd, and six are omitted. Missing projects are: Spindle side table, Octagonal Taboret, Bungalow mailbox, Heirloom cradle, Two Frames, and the Garden storage bench. All the articles include materials lists, construction techniques, and sources for supplies. The bonus disc includes ten articles on techniques, as well as 10 project plans, all are PDFs, so they print well. This book is a worthy addition to the home craftsman's library.

Would rate this as a five except for two things. 1. Although extra material is advertised as available on a bonus CD, I can find no means by which I can obtain or otherwise gain access to this from the Kindle version of the book. 2. The material cut lists for the projects are almost unreadably small in the kindle version. As a lesser issue, I would have liked a few more pictures of some of the complex pieces during assembly.

It's O.K., but a little thin on content. The CD is a nice touch, but the coverage of this FAMOUS furniture style is thinly represented.

Very nice book. Nice variety of projects. All color photos. Lots of detail in the drawings and many 'tips and tricks' to help with your projects. A valuable addition to my arts and crafts library.

I may not be utilizing it, but it is giving me some ideas.

This book has so many great ideas for furniture. I don't know where to start. I love the instructions. I am a beginner but I think even I can create nice furniture.

If you like Greene and Greene this is a must have.Have shared this with my woodworking friends and they like it a lot. We will be making several projects from here as I fill my house with Arts & Crafts style furniture.

Love the projects in this one. I just need the confidence that I can build something.

Review

Praise for Women of Resistance Cited by Autostraddle as one of the "Queer and Feminist Books to Read in 2018" "Here we have 49 women and men and queers and inter-sexuals throwing their everything at this moment in time when the patriarch is really shaking, and it looks like he’s about to tumble down. We’ve got this shiny new book. People are scared that nothing will be left after he falls except a bunch of poems. Pick up this glowing book as you’re crawling through the rubble, and poem by poem and page by page you’ll begin to know that you’ll be okay. You’re in there, and so are your friends. You won’t starve, you’re safe and strong thanks to all these proud, funny, violent, trembling words. Start memorizing. Cause the future is here and this stuff is true." ― Eileen Myles

My daughter-in-law and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very thoughtful and sometimes heart wrenching, but very true to life!

I want to believeI’m a better woman nowthat I’m writing poems.that when I say, poemsI mean another wayto say, revenge.(Denice Frohman, “Hunger”)My god understands how slave women plucked pearlsfrom between their legs rather than see them strung up by the neck.(Elizabeth Acevdeo, “An Open Letter to the Protestors Outside the Planned Parenthood Near My Job”)This little grandmotherwas ordered to pull down her paintingsbecause the Rabbi was offendedby her version of Eve: 9 months pregnant, unbroken & reaching for another apple.(Ruth Irupé Sanabria, “On Mate & the Work”)Compiled in response to the 2016 election, WOMEN OF RESISTANCE: POEMS FOR A NEW FEMINISM features the work of fifty feminist activists; some established poets, other relative newcomers; from all walks of life. The collection is both timely, and depressingly timeless: sexual assault, objectification, interpersonal violence, racism, police brutality, the suppression of women’s voices, disenfranchisement, white supremacy; all are issues that we’ve been fighting for far too long. (Cue the meme, “I Can’t Believe I Still Have To Protest This F***ing S***.”)Some of the poems I loved; others, I struggled with; and a small handful I skimmed over altogether. The collection’s greatest strength is its inclusiveness, diversity, and breadth of voices. And yet, WOMEN OF RESISTANCE is a little uneven, and I can’t say that I always “got” – or even enjoyed – the poems featured here. (To be fair, poetry isn’t my strong suit, and I’ve been feeling a little burned out on it lately to boot.)THAT SAID, when a poem resonated with me, it was often a loud and resounding affair. There are some truly astounding pieces of verse in here! In particular I adored the work of Denice Frohman (“Hunger,” “A Woman’s Place”), Kimberley Johnson (“Female”), Jacqueline Jones (“Civil Rights”), Kim Addonizio “To the Woman Crying Uncontrollably in the Next Stall”), Laura Theobald (“Getting a UTI”), Elizabeth Acevdeo (“An Open Letter to the Protestors Outside the Planned Parenthood Near My Job”), Ada Limón (“Service”), Stacey Waite (“The Four Nights She’s Gone”), Patricia Smith (“What She Thinks as She Waits by the Door”), Ruth Irupé Sanabria (“On Mate & the Work”), Mary Ruefle (“Woodtangle”), Rachel McKibbens (“Shiv”), and Lauren K. Alleyne (“Ode to the Pantsuit”).Usually I prefer reading ebooks on my Kindle, since it’s easier to highlight text and take notes this way, but this particular book looks its best on an ipad or other full-color device. There are some neat black and white protest photos here and there, and the formatting tends to stay true to the original.

Women of Resistance - Poems for a New Feminism is a powerful anthology of feminist poetry edited by Danielle Barnhart and Iris Mahan. With contributions from 41 poets, including names such as Elizabeth Acevedo, Mahogany L. Browne, Jacqueline Jones LaMon, and Trish Salah, Women of Resistance is honestly heartstopping at times, so familiar it might take your breath away, and also heartbreaking because there is still so much work to be done.Read this book slowly, read every word, and read it aloud. Hear your voice rise with the power that the words will infuse into your heart - these poems are for us all, and for our children, and should be read, told, recited, and read again.Women of Resistance is everyone, is a fight for real equality, encompassing all gender identities, races, ethnicities, and sexuality; songs of pain, of love, of questions, of the toll that patriarchy and racism and classicism have taken on our society. The poems resonate so hard in me, inspiring me, and are a collective account telling me that we are not alone, we don’t need to fight alone, we are in this together. They talk of depression, of war, of injustice, of sexual assault, of childbirth, of abortion, of loss, of love, of breastfeeding, of racism, of brutality, of sisterhood... Of everything. This anthology of amazing artists hit me like a punch in the stomach but also lifted me to my feet - this is really us, and we can keep using all the tools and talents that we have to make a change.

Big shout out to NetGalley and OR Books for hooking me up with this AMAZING COLLECTION!!!---------------------WOW---------------------"listen isn't always the same as shut up, remember the eye of the witness disarms the devil."The intro starts off by describing the collection as "part love letter, part manifesto, part confession, part wish---and those are just the raw materials."I would say this is highly accurate. This collection ripped my heart out, sewed it back in, boiled it in oil and healed it again. It's ridiculous how 1 book can hold so many emotions."The thing about it is, once interior parts of us are brought outward, there is no way to put them back inside."I felt so much while reading this: power, heart wrenching compassion, whimsy, anger, and an over all heavy yet comforting emotional drain (is that even a thing?)."Today how I resent the way sadness and loss are souvenirs we're forced to carry with us."This is definitely something I want EVERYONE to read!!!"Don't begrudge me my sashay walk, it's all I got sometimes."

Since April is National Poetry Month, I decided to read this new collection of feminist poems for the month. A lot of reviews are saying how 'timely' this collection is, and that's absolutely true. But I'd also add that feminist poetry has always been timely and necessary. What struck me first about this collection is that I'd never heard of or read any of the poets who contributed. I don't try to keep up-to-date with current poets, but I do regularly read current poetry, so I was surprised and pleased I didn't recognize any of the names. The poems range a lot thematically, from sexual abuse to current politics to descriptions of loving female bonds. They also range in style, some leaning toward abstract, others much more concrete, some lyrical, some intentionally jarring and broken.I never really connected to any of the pieces, and I worry that's because I read it as an egalley, and the formatting wasn't that great. This is a book I recommend reading in print. And I may end up rereading it as such. Thanks to Netgalley and OR Books for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
