Classic book on realistic rhythms for rock drumming. Teaches proper counting of notes and rhythms and uses proper terminology in an accessible way. Each section starts with some basic patterns and rhythms and builds up into more complex rhythms. Great reference for anyone starting to learn or experienced drummers wanting to learn something new.
I am primarily a jazz/latin-style drummer. I've been playing and teaching for 40+ years. I recently started to practice open technique (LH ride on hi-hat). The Chapin, Riley, et.al books were a little too complicated to get started. I did all the Stone Stick Control variations, but that only went so far. So I ordered this book and have been delighted. Not only did it provide me with graduated patterns but presented me with some new ideas and technique challenges. The CD included does provide a modicum of assistance. Not all exercises are recorded and the sound quality is lacking. This is a method book every serious drummer (regardless of level) should have in their library and spent some time going through.
I am a middle aged classic rock drummer. This book is pure genius and I wish I would have had it 25 years ago. 70% of the stuff in this book I figured out on my own by playing along to music. But, this sure would have saved me a bunch of trial and error.Also, some of the ideas in here are super cool like the 16th note triplet rhythms and the syncopated rhythms sections. They sound great, are not that hard to play, and I don't think I would have come up with them on my own in a million years. Totally awesome.When you are practicing the exercises, you will be saying stuff like, "man, this sounds just like Bonham" or "this sounds just like the intro to Tom Sawyer." Here is the kicker - this book was around first. It is too cool to see the underlying ideas behind most of the classic rock that you have heard a million times. In the DVD, they call it an "Italian recipe book for rock drums."The DVD and disks help a lot too. My only complaint is that some exercises in the book are not covered in the DVD or audio disks. That kinda sucks, because almost every exercise is awesome. I am OK at reading music, but it would be nice to "double check" my work to make sure I am playing it correctly.This book might be too complicated for a very beginner. But if you can play a few basic rock drum beats, this book will make you a much, much better rock drummer. It will teach you basic music theory and sight reading too.Carmine Appice is a truly excellent instructor. I give the book, DVD and audio disks a 10 out of 10.A true classic.
Our son has taken drum lessons with a professional drummer for 4 years, and we just started using this book. He is 11 years old. We all watched the fun video, and our son has taken his drumming lessons much more seriously since this book because it has short, concise exercises that are easy to understand. Also, the companion CD and DVDs help every lesson even more. We are pleased to use this resource.
Once I figure out how to combine the book and CD I will come back to the review. I tried with the book and CD and my drum set and didn't know how to follow the book. I thought this was going to be a video.Will return.
I purchased this with Amazon via Forever Drumming. It arrived with no DVD, after I complained about it I got a reimbursment of $17.00. Forver Drumming told me it never came with a DVD. If this was true, then howcome it's advertised with one?I went to the Carmine Appice website & sent them an email about it. They said it definately should come with a DVD.Apart from that it's a pretty cool book & CD I can't talk about the DVD.I wish I had purchased it with Amazon, it's the last time I'm going to try & save a few dollars by buying it at the cheaper price or "Available from these Sellers" links on the Amazon website. I'll just purchase it from Amazon in future.
I'm really enjoying using this book for my students. The patterns/exercises are spread over 3 staves vs. 1. It's odd to look at at first but it makes logical sense; easier to read as the instrument parts are spread out. So far the examples have been challenging but rewarding. Plenty of room to modify, tweak patterns and talk dynamics - the book also encourages it. The book also does great job at building on the previous exercises. Great book!
For teaching drumset, this is the method I love. The book teaches reading and counting by way of many different beats/grooves in simple 1 and 2 measure phrases. If you do the different variations for each beat as described in the front of the book your coordination will go through the roof!I still like to use Haskell Harr for rudimental teaching. Using them both together gives students the best of both worlds.I highly recommend this book. (And for the younger students, get the one written for younger kids).The only negative thing about this book is that they didn't make each exercise a seperate CD track so some of them are hard to locate. If they did that, it would be perfect!
