Crawley paints a good overall picture of George Washington. He has conveyed all the strengths and weaknesses of Washington and has shown how Washington is the one essential hero without which the United States would not be a Sovereign Nation. I would have wanted to see more of Washington's letters cited in an index at the back of the book If stories of why these letters were written could be told. Is it easy to read book and in that sense it is certainly well-written but at the end of the book my feeling is that so much has been left out about Washington the man The General and The Patriot.
A good perspective on the nations early years and Washington's relationship with the British. This relationship and his years involved with British - Colonial campaigns gave him tremendous military insights that prepared him to lead the American Revolution. The book looks at Washington as a person and how he was key in shaping the new republic after the war. An excellent book that will give you a deeper appreciation for his greatness and a deeper perspective on why our government works the way it does today.
A good basic summary of George Washington’s upbringing and life.
Considering its brevity it gave a good picture of the man Washington was. I have read other, more detailed biographies of Washington and thoroughly enjoyed this one.
This is my first biography of George Washington, and it reads very well, with a lot of personal and historical insight. I imagined reading this story out loud to a middle school or High School History class with very good results. This is the kind of material that can really bring history to life without forcing the reader to get dragged into too much scholarly speculation or endless questioning.I found that while the author's introduction suggested it would be a somewhat critical view of Mr. Washington, I found the facts to speak quite honestly enough for him, showing how he personally dealt with the fact that he owned slaves while he was leading one of the most unique revolutions for freedom that the world has ever seen. The author points out numerous times that the virtues and the resulting accomplishments of Mr. Washington were nearly as mythical as history claims, a rarity among epic figures of history.It's also pretty clear from the people and the realities of that time, that we would most likely not have had a United States if slavery had been put on the table first before, bringing the union together first, with all of its myriad complexities and unprecedented risks. The history makes it very clear and it should be stressed where ever American history is taught: it was not possible to deal with both issues simultaneously; and to the nation's credit, (and through the purer virtues of that other later President), it really wasn't that long into our history (four score and seven years) until we finally faced it and dealt with it decisively.
This is full of information I was unaware of. Having been educated in public/government schools, I had no access to this information. I enjoyed reading this. Good writing. Thank you.
Well-written and well-edited book on G. Washington for those of us that are interested in the early presidents. Recommended!
Learned so much about dear George Washington. About his early days mostly. A fast read.
